how to reset orbit pivot point on a MAC?

I read a lot of posts on the pivoting but couldn't find an answer so I'll post a new question.

The problem is this. When using the cube on the upper right, orbit is around the center of the screen, which is nice, when I use the scroll wheel however, the orbit pivot point seems to be a random point on the screen and I don't succeed unchanging it.

There seems to be a shortcut using shift key, then clicking an orbit point after which orbit with scroll wheel should be around that chosen point. I have tried many combinations and orders of shift and click and scroll and other possible options (alt, or function key) but I can't get it done. Is it maybe because I am working on a mac? and if so: what is the right way to reset the orbit point on a mac?

btw: my mouse preferences are set to "solid works"  (although the orbiting doesn't work like in solid works)

Hi,

I have some answers for you.

Standard behavior is this:

  • When the entire model is on screen, orbit is at the center.
  • When model is partially off screen, orbit is at point closest to center.

So I think what you consider "random" might be happening when your model is partially off screen. It's picking a point for you.

To set the pivot point, there is no Shift + MMB click in SWx orbit mode. You must use the right click menu, and pick Set Orbit Center, it's at the very top of the dropdown menu.

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any more questions.

Cool, that was it! thanks for the quick reply.

Strange that on the forum I found many shift-click replies and now one mentioned the right mouse button menu.

I think what happened is that I accidentally set the pivot point to a strange location. At re-opening this morning it behaved normally as you described and I was able to set another pivot point and (also important) was able to reset it to standard at the center.  Thanks.
