How to put text on project?

Sorry folks, it's been a while and I have been a bit "out of action".

I'm modeling something and for the sake of "doing it right" I want to include the text as seen on the real thing.

But I'm stuck how to do this.

I can see/find how to add "text" to a sketch, but I think that is more for notes, etc.   Not for actual text to be seen.

This is one I found online.

Attached is the project.  "Equipment stand".

In there is a component "MCP".   That is the item of interest.

There is a lot of (ok: some) text on there, and I would like it (or at least some/most) to also be seen.

So, now with what the real thing looks like and my effort......   Any suggestions please?

Hi ,

you can modeling the text and give it a material

I don't understand what you mean and the picture you included is also confusing to me.

I just did one instance of adding some text to show you the process.  One thing to keep in mind, if you extrude the text as a body, each character is a separate body so bodies can build up very quickly.  If you extrude and join, then you do not get extra bodies but you have to add appearances by face.  Model is attached.

Thanks John.

(As per my normal: I goofed in the question)

I was more interested in the white text.  The red text is not that important.   But I do now understand has to be done.

The next part is this:

There is a lot of text on this - as you may see from the picture.

Is there a way I can do "another sketch" on top of that one with ONLY TEXT on it, then extrude that sketch?

(Does that make sense?)

I had the sketches turned off as this is all imported into another project and it is annoying when the sketches are turned on:  they are then visible in the next level project and I am not sure I can turn them off there.

So I've sort of found it is best to only have what I want visible in the higher project visible when I save it.

Very much appreciated the reply.

Hope you aren't too close to Florida.   I see they are not having a good time just now.

This is what I have since done.

Slightly better, but also slightly worse.   😉

If I turn off the sketches, I lose the writing.

Not the end of the world, but this isn't the correct way to do things.

I extruded the text (as John said) only a bit above the thickness.

But to colour(ise) it I would then have to "paint" (Adjust the colour) of the faces of every letter of every word - yes?

Hi,

That's what decals are for.

Thanks very much for that Guenther.

I really should look more at the menus and what they offer.

Though that has it's own set of "problems".   It is a decal which means it is a picture and I have to make one.

Handy for graphical stuff and the like.

I'm not sure it is THE solution, but I've tucked it into my tool belt.

It can be the solution if the text is not to be milled, lasered or 3-D printed, but is only needed for presentation purposes.

You have unnecessary repeated dimensions.

Probably should have asked your first question here.

White dots and blue geometry should keep you awake at night.

What behavior do you observe if you click and drag the white dots?

Now, on to your text issue, let me take a look...

It might be easier to change the face color rather than the text color.

Thanks.

I am still not getting all the tricks needed to constrain all the lines.

Dave (Browne) has helped me some way but I am still not quite getting it all.

Originally I made everything in the project at one level.   I have been shown/told that it is better to make components then put them in place as needed.

I am getting there - slowly.

WRT the white dots:

Yes, they are probably not set correctly.  I think they can be moved if I am not careful.

Double/Multiple things repeated:

Ok, that is a hack I am using just now.

I draw up a template of sizes (lines in the dash mode) to help me visulise a starting point.

Yes, I could just make a proper "base sketch" with all the constraints.   Alas old habits and all that.

I do appreciate the help though.
