How to mill interlocking rings?

This is a simplified version of a design I want to carve into the lid of a box.  The box is intended as a wedding anniversary gift.   I want to mill a design that gives the appearance of interlocking rings.  I'm not quite sure if I should be trying to use the loft command, or create a set of solid, interlocked rings and then carve away the unwanted sections.

 

In this test file, I want to create some slopes such that at intersection 1, ring B is carved away in a gradual slope so it appears to dive under Ring A.   Similarly, at intersection 2, Ring A should be carved away so it appears to dive under Ring B.

 

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

OK, I see -- you are using the loft command to create the slope and then mirroring the face across the plane of the step.   And then you create the second ring using the circular pattern command.  That part is a little fuzzy to me but I'll keep studying it.

  1. Sketch one ring.
  2. Copy/Paste it (70mm away from the first)
  3. Rotate the pasted copy 10 degrees.
  4. Create the box.
  5. Rotate it 5 degrees.

Machining the sharp angles will not be easy.  I've had good luck with sub-millimeter endmills.

OK, that's clever.  I never thought of tilting the rings themselves.   

 

I had in mind more of a "celtic knot" approach, where one limb appears to go under the other.
