How to make layered look

I wanted to make 3d modelling similar to this vase which has "layered" look to it, but i'm having a trouble on recreating it.

So far what i did was mimmicking the contours by using project to surface command, but as you can see it doesn't look right

thank you in advance!

Hello, @Anonymous  -  so when you have drawn the contour, then use the command emboss and follow the instructions such as which profile for which area. the profile can be turned in any direction and placed on any surface. it is better to give in your f3d work.          greetings mango

I would not use the solid modeling tools to get that organic, layered look of the vase in the photo.

For me, this calls for the form tools, definitely for the leaf structure, but perhaps for the entire vase.
