how to join a hollow component with a solid one

Hi,

Ive designed a stepper motor housing that i want to "push" into another component which is solid. When i try to do this the part of the solid comp that projects into the housing remains instead of being cut away.

i have made a solid balnk of the housing (tool) which i can use to cut and then insert and  join the hollow housing in the hole but it seems a long winded way around the problem and i cant help but feel im missing something obvious.

is there a way of doing this simply?

Thanks please find attached the file. This is what happens hppens i try to join them, the solid object comes through the hollow one, and i want the hollow component to displace the solid mass

It is not real clear, from your screen capture where the two bodies are in relation to each other.  I took a whack at it and the model is attached.  If it is not correct, please define your desired results better.

And it you want the two combined as one body, the model is attached.  The previous file was not combined.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to help. unfortunately thats not what im trying to achieve. I have actually done what i need to do but im certain theres a more efficient way of doing it! what i need to do is insert a hollow object into a solid one so that the hollow object removes the mass of the solid one and replaces the solid mass with a shaped void that i can insert a motor into.

This is what im after, but to do it i had to create a solid component the same shape and dimensions as the hollow one and use it as a tool to cut the main component and then move the hollow component into the void created by the solid one. There must be a simple way of inserting a hollow piece into a solid one!

Hi, I would like to propose 2 methods where you do not need to create a new component. For the sake of simplicity, I have created 2 bodies instead of components. I have also replaced your models with a simple cylinder and a shelled out cuboid.

2 combines

  • Use the combine tool with the cuboid as the cutting tool to cut into the cylinder (target). Check the keep tools option to keep the cuboid.
  • There will be a useless chunk of solid remaining which you can hide or delete.
  • You will need to perform another combine to join the 2 remaining bodies together.

Boundary fill

  • Select both the cylinder and cuboid as tools.
  • When selecting cells, check all cells except for the chunk of cylinder that resides within the cuboid.
  • Set operation to new body and check remove tools.
  • This command combines all the resultant bodies and remove the excess in one step.

I have attached the files here. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Sorry about the late reply, ive been away from my computer for 2 weeks. Ive tried your methods and both work with freshly created bodies. Thanks.

However for some reason it doesnt work with the bodies/components that i created. i must have done something to them.

Ill continue to play with them and see what happens, thanks for you help.
