How To Copy A File

With SW or SE you can make copies of parts or assemblies to create revisions while keeping the current model. How do you do that with this program?

I've copied the file and saved it to my computer (my preferred way of working), but if I click on the part/assembly (whatever it is) in it's file location to open it, it opens a few Fusion 360. If I'm in the Fusion window I don't see 'Open File' as an option. What is the process?

Hello GarJoBar,

In Fusion 360 is not standard “Open File” command  because Fusion 360 is Cloud base application, it means all designs (files) are stored on cloud. But you can upload your CAD files via "Upload" command in Fusion 360. Then it will be available for editing.

Thanks, but I don't want to upload them, the part/assembly I created is already there, I want to make a copy so I can do revisions, like SW/Pack and Go and SE/Revision Manager.

Fusion 360 doesn’t have  “revision manager” like Pack and Go. Fusion 360 has whole assembly stored in one document and each document save creates a new version.

All Versions is possible to see in Activity panel or in A360 web environment.

See enclose images:

Activity panel in Fusion - Version tab - constains list of all versions for current document

A360 - Item Details - Version tab - allows you to promote an older version. It will create a new version on first position.

Let me know if it helps you.

Are there any plans to allow direct opening of versions without the need to promote first. I think this would be quite usefull if you wants to just get a copy of a version.

Hi Mark,

Yes, there is a plan to add this functionality into any of future releases.

Thanks, that works if everything you do is linear. But I find I like to go off in many different directions testing ideas and then selecting the ones I like and creating a new folder to refine it. I might go through that process several times, which is why I find Pack and Go or RM so useful.

I do this now by creating a copy of the whole file (with a different name) inside the project. Or for components, doing a “Save a Copy As”. I might have several iterations of a design as distinct files. I find this easier than tying to remember what version # I went in a particular direction.

However, there is a change on the Fusion 360 road map that will allow branching off and reconnecting versions. This is, in my opinion, a Huge Big Deal.  This could allow some very interesting workflows for those like me that are iterating versions constantly, or working with design inputs that may change repeatedly.

The beginnings of this change are mentioned in this blog post:  http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-differently/fusion-system-architecture-changes-coming-in-the-ne...

While there is more description in this one:  http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-product-roadmap/the-future-of-collaboration-in-fusion-360/b...

Hi Mark,

In current release is possible to open a version in Activity panel.

It will open selected model version which is possible to Save As a new document.
