How to align a component to project axis

Hello,

I have had this issue a few times, and never figured how to solve it. I have an imported component in my model, I want to move the component directly along the x axis, so it stays in its same orientation. However, the axis of movement shown for the component is not aligned with the axis of the model. How can I resolve this?

Many thanks!

I'm not 100% clear from your screenshot what is going on, but in general you need to use the Set Pivot option to align the pivot orientation of the imported component to align with the part of your model you want it to move in relation to. Exactly how you do this will depend on the geometry of the imported component (cylinder? box? complex shape?). But you should be able to set the pivot in a way that will allow you to position an imported component in your desired orientation. Setting the pivot to a planar face (which you appear to have) will allow motion to be constrained the the X axis.

If the ultimate goal is to establish a fixed relationship between components, then you should look into the use of the Joint command. If you want it to slide along the X axis, for instance, then a slider joint can accomplish that.

Hi,

Forget about alignment and get familiar with  joints.
