How do you open Fusion 360 Zip files created by someone else?

Hello Forum,

I follow John Saunders NYC CNC on YouTube for his Fusion 360 tutorials and CAM. He recently posted a very useful tutorial on making a mold. His files were supplied as this link.

I have downloaded and up zipped the file but I have no idea how one uses it in Fusion? Maybe I missed a step or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi @jgaertner, is this how you downloaded the design from John's site:

I tried this, and it produced a file with a .f3d extension in my downloads folder (from Chrome).  Do you get something different than an f3d file?  If you do get the f3d, you need to either:

  1. upload it from the data panel inside Fusion itself:

  2. use "New Design From File":

this will open the file.  When you Save it, you can choose what project/folder it goes into.

Hope this helps

Hello Jeff,

I am using Chrome on Windows 7 Professional. When I down load the file I get a zipped file on my computer. I right click the folder and tell it to unzip the file and I get even more folders but no f3d folder or file like I am use to? This has happened before when I have tried to open Fusion files from other people.  This is very frustrating. jagertner

I have just tried uploading the zipped file to Fusion. Its in my Projects menu but it shows it as Zipped. It will not open? If I change the extension to .f3d it still will not open?

There is probably some setting on your Chrome or computer, or anti-virus software that is causing this.  The truth is that an f3d file really is a zip file under the hood.  So, something is probably peeking inside and determining that this is really a zip file, and changing the extension.  When you try to expand the zip, you are seeing the insides of the Fusion design.

So, give this a try:  Just rename the downloaded file from .zip to .f3d, and see if you can open or upload it.  I believe that should work.

OK! Success. I found that when I go to download the file from its source, in this case John Saunder's web site I have to specify that it should be saved as a .f3d file. If I do that, all is wonderful!  Thanks for helping me solve this issue once and for all!
