How do I wind and unwind a flat coil spring?

Hello Everyone,

I'm working on a project and I want to use a flat coil spring in it. So, I want to know how can I simulate the winding and unwinding of a flat coil spring.

In the figure above, I want the coil to wind when the rod rotates clockwise direction and unwind in the opposite.

I'm using this in a counterweight assembly to provide an additional spring force to keep the system balanced (would like to know your thoughts on this or if there are any other solutions that can be used instead of using a spring).

I also want to know how do I create a string between two blocks that will work in a simulation?

You will need Autodesk Inventor Professional for that functionality.

Animate Parameter.

Students can get 1yr (renewable) learning license of Inventor Professional for free from the Autodesk Education website.

Did you put realistic clearance for your slide blocks (I can’t see in image).

That method does not apply to this spring because this spring is a spiral (variable radius)not a helix.

That method has been posted many, many years ago and multiple times since then on this forum.

Uhmm, it will take several years of training/experience...

Inventor is a professional program and deserves (requires?) a professional level of preparation. 🎓

Your Sketches are not fully defined - this is usually covered in the first 10-30 minutes of an Inventor class and should be mastered before moving on to Animation of Parameters and/or Dynamic Simulation.  Where are your dimensions?  Are you just "eyeballing" this to the grid?

There is not clearance for these slide blocks in the slots - so the mechanism will not work in the real world.

Is it your intention that this cylindrical rod remain stationary - or do you intend for it to revolve?

Well, it was an idea that I wanted to try out.

Your geometry is pretty simple - concentrate first on how to fully define sketches.

Ask questions when you have blue lines rather than black lines (actually the colors depend on your environment settings) - but you need to dimension your sketches.  That is the foundation of all other work.  You don't want to build a house of cards on a foundation of sand.

And I'm currently making a model and trying to apply proper dimensions and everything...
