How do I design an incremental joint better?

Take a look at the following screenshot:

Unbenannt.PNG

This part is supposed to be one half of an "incremental joint", e.g. a joint that uses friction and tension to "snap" into 45° increments when enough force is applied along the axis (this half is "pointy" while the other, here invisible half is concave, to avoid them jumping out of axis).

I've managed to design a cutting tool using a 3D sketch that I then cut the cylinder with, but the 3D sketching feature is not that great, as it seems to have problems handling circular symmetries (they break if any other constraint is applied).

So, I was wondering, is there a nice, simple, and parametric way to design such a shape?

Best regards, Markus

Simple enough sketch two lines for a valley

Loft them to a point.

pattern by 8, and

stitch to make a cutting article to

split the cylinder body.

Produces the male / female parts in a few easy steps.

Might help.
