How do I create a lip at the edge of my model?

Hi all,

I have tried to create a lip around the edge of my model, as I am eventually planning to make a lid which will fit on top of what I have already created. I sketched then extruded rectangles on all 4 sides of my model, but there is a thin layer on top of what I have extruded (see model attached).

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

I took at guess at what your wanting based on your model.  look at the last 2 features (the sketch and the extrude)
