I'm designing a wood fire pit with a round grill for barbeque. How do I create a diamond mesh grate for a round grill?

It depends what you are trying accomplish here.  Are you trying to actually manufacture the grill yourself?  If not, and if you are just using it for representational purposes, I would go with one of the mesh materials.

If you want to actually model the mesh, the answer will be more involved, and slower to compute.  So, if you don't really need the mesh to be modeled in 3D, I'd use the material

This is very helpful as I am presenting a design and will not be printing it. In the future, I would like to learn how to make the mesh just so I can expand my abilities.

I just tried this and when I drag to mesh to the grill, it doesn't show. Would you know why that happened?

Hi @Anonymous, I'm not sure what could have happened.  Could you possibly record a screencast so we can take a look?  Also, sharing your design might help, as well.

The one thing I did not point out in my first response is that I created a separate body for the grill itself, and the grill is a thin cylinder.  Here I have moved the grill vertically so you can see:
