How Do I Constrain....

I'm importing a Solidworks design into Fusion, and re-constructing all the features.  My process is, generally, to import the Solidworks part file, enable the Timeline, and create one or more sketches containing projections of all the necessary geometry.  I then break the link to the imorted geometry, fully define the sketch, and use it as the basis for the new feature created as Fusion bodies.  When the new model is complete, I delete the imported model.

But, I have one persistent problem I haven't been able to resolve.  In almost every case, some feature in the projected sketch, typically a circle, needs its center to be anchored to the sketch origin.  But, I have been unable to find any way to apply a coincident constraint between the origin point and the center point of the circle without first move the circle AWAY from the origin point, which screws up other geometry.  HOW/WHAT do I have to select to make the circle coincident to the origin without moving the circle??  I seem to be able to select either the circle center, or the origin, but not both.  Holding the mouse button down while over the origin does NOT give me the pop-up select menu.  What is the trick?

Ray L.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for your post in the Forum.

Could you may try to hide and show the origin when you select your entities for the Coincident constraint?

Please, keep us updated.

Thanks,

In a simple sketch test here, I can't reproduce the problem on my machine, Windows 10.

having followed your steps, the constraint is removed when the link is broken, but I get the select other list every time....

Then I can apply the constraint by selecting the separate items in the list

Sorry can't take it further

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks again for your post and thanks to @davebYYPCU for trying to reproduce this issue.

Could you may share a Screencast with us and show us what you try to achieve?

Please, keep us updated.

Thank you,

I think the problem is one that has plagued me from the start with Fusion - the "modal-ness" of the UI seems to VERY often confuse itself.  I VERY often find it takes more than one attempt to "activate" a mode or feature before the UI actually pays attention.  For example, if I want to edit a sketch, I right-click on the sketch in the timeline, only to find the "Edit Sketch" option is disabled.  I then click ANYWHERE else, then again right-click on the sketch in the timeline and this time the "Edit Sketch" option is enabled.  This is, BY FAR, the single MOST annoying aspect of Fusion - I must CONFIRM that every mouse action is actually "heard" before proceeding.  This is a constant problem with Fusion, and not with ANY other application I've ever used.  In the current case, often when I click on the Coincident constraint icon in the Sketch Palette, that click is ignored.  When I then try to select one of the entities I want to constrain, that is also ignored.  The answer seems to be to fumble around doing random things until the UI decides to start paying attention again.

Here is something odd I just noticed - the part I've just been playing with has three concentric circles.  When I click and hold on the center point, which is also the sketch origin, the selection list shows three "sketch points".  When I hover over each of these, one highlights the inner-most circle, another highlights BOTH the middle and outer circles, and the third highlights NOTHING, which actually selects the sketch origin.  That seems like a clear bug.

I tried to do a screencast to demonstrate this, but, once again, the screencast recorder has stopped working, and I just don't have the patience to un-install and re-install it for the umteenth time.  Every bloody time I try to use screencast, I find it's just stopped working, and I have to uninstall, delete all of its temp data, then re-install it to get it working again.

Ray L.
