How can a file with a linked step-file be exported and uploaded again.

Hello everyone

I'm exporting the Fusion-Model file, which is linked to the Step-Model.step file.

I'm uploading the Fusion-Model file again, but the linked Step-Model.step file is missing.

Is there a way that the linked step-file is not lost when exporting and uploading?

It's not a step file once it's been loaded into Fusion 360.  You can export it as an f3d or a step file, either of which can be uploaded again.

The "Step-Model.step" file is truly a Step-file and not a Translation to Fusion and was uploaded into the Cloud with AnyCad. The "Fusion-Model" file is linking the "Step-Model.step" file.

After exporting and uploading the "Fusion-Model" file, the link to the "Step-Model.step" file is lost.

Interesting.  Step files uploaded through Fusion 360 get translated to native Fusion 360 files.  Inventor files can also be directly uploaded to Fusion 360.  Why use Anycad?

If the current version of your design would actually include a linked component of the STEP file, it would show up in the browser with a chain link symbol. However, it doesn't!

I tested this just now.

I copied the STEP file into the directory :

It then showed up in the respective older in the Fusion 360 data panel.

I then saved a black Fusion 360 file under the name "Pallet Assembly F360 native".

Then I inserted the Pallet Assembly v8.step into that file and saved it.

There's the link symbol.

A little note here:

If the CAD system you are using to create the step file is directly supported by the AnyCAD functionality, there is no need to export a step. YOU can directly upload the native file. You can open the native format from the AnyCAD folder in the the native CAD systema , make change and save the file.

When you open the Fusion 360 file the design is linked into, you'll be prompted to update the Fusion 360 design.

I've done this with entire assemblies that were designed in SolidWorks!

In my Example the "Fusion-Model" file is linking the "Step-Model.step" file.

I used the method described in this video.

Aha, that seems to have different functionality from the method I described, but  don't know what that difference is.

I'll have to watch that video later and see if that reveals anything.

Maybe I can dig up some documentation that summarizes these long and wordy videos is a short paragraph or two.

If you are using a "Step-model" (or other formats) from an other CAD-System, and you want to replace the "Step-model" with a newer version, you need AnyCad so as not to lose all subsequent features.

Here I have made a sample video:

@Christoph_360

So I did check with the Fusion 360 team what the difference is between the two workflows. Th workflow you (and Jason Lichtman) are using allows to modify the imported "foreign"  geometry, where as using a linked component would require you yo make changes to the source geometry in the native application.

Yes, I had the same experience.

If I insert the AnyCad-file into a new file as an X-Ref component, I need to either create a new component with "Boundary Fill" or create a derived component in a new file with "Derive" in order to be able to change the geometry.
