Hole through curved surface?

How could one go about getting a hole/channel from this curved outside face in to the pocket in the middle (following the red line)?  It doesn't let me start a sketch on this surface, presumably because it is curved.  I'm at a loss here and appreciate any help I can get!

Hi,

The bigger question is how are you going to actually cut the hole when machining?

I think you would be best modelling this the same way you would actually machine

it. Do you need an actual curved hole or will a hole cut into the pocket on the inside

join with a hole drilled from the outside?

If you are going to cut a straight hole into the side of the pocket to some depth, then

you would simply drill a hole on the outer face to join them. To get the holes lined up

you will probably need to set up a Plane at an angle to get the perpendicular or close

to it on the curves, and another plane that cuts the object at the depth you want the

hole.

The hard bit will be how deep can you make the hole within the pocket as the machine

tool will be cutting at right angles into the wall of the pocket. The hole from the curved

face will be just straight.

Cheers

Andrew

Sketch the red curved line, (on a plane at correct height)

Create > Pipe > solid > set size and to cut.

This will be 3d printed, so no machining the hole.  I need a pocket about 20mm diameter with a depth of 28mm, and from there a 10mm hole into the other opening would work.  I just can't figure out how to do this.  I will also need to lay out a rectangle on the outside where the 20*28mm pocket would be for the cover plate.

I could try that, but I also need to sketch a rectangle on the outside (where the red circle is) so I can lay out my cover plate that will go over the hole.

3d Sketch ended up working out for me.  I still need to learn to get through the design process without relying on the 3d sketch feature...All in time I guess.

One sketch to do this, is all you need.  Add correct dimensions.
