Hit and miss on Shelling in Brad Tallis' tutorials

I've been availing myself to what is nothing short of a  full-blown Fusion 360 course in a series of tutorials by Brad Tallis who walks the viewer through every step in making a complex model of a laser projector. In at least two lessons, he shells an object. The default shelling action cuts into material that need to remain intact. The work-around is to left click and hold down on the selected surface) to reveal a sub-menu wherein isolated sections under the skin can be selected. This is a real hit and miss thing for me. Holding down quite often presents a submenu that doesn't include the face or edge I need. Letting off the mouse, moving it, repeating the action may reveal another list of options. That seems totally weird-- inconsistency of behavior. Usually, if I do it enough times, I get the submenu I need and then I can move on. I'm currently working on Part 2 of the series and cannot reveal the profile I need for the life of me. Brad mentions holding down the CTRL key, but that doesn't seem to change anything for me. Any ideas? What am I doing wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Select Other menu you are referring to is definitely mouse position dependent.  That is intentional.  What that tool does is to fire a ray from the camera position all the way through the model.  Anything it hits in the model, which matches one of the active selection filters, is put into the list.  Changing the mouse position can definitely change the list - sometimes you are over an edge, sometimes not.  So, when using Select Other, you have to be aware of where the thing you are after is in the model, relative to the mouse position.  There are, of course, other ways to select things, such as rotating the view, turning off visibility of things that are in front of what you are after, etc.

I don't remember much of that series now,

Yes he has clutter more often than not, (you have said, you are experimenting in and around this tutorial.)

don't fuss with Select Other,

when you can hide the obstruction and select the top face, (if that's the op you want) plain as the nose on a face.

With Select Other, move the mouse into the list, rolling down the list with the mouse will highlight each item in the window, select (click on) the right one.

Might help....

I hope no one thinks I'm criticizing Brad's work. I just get jammed up. I
learn more from him than anyone!
