History marker keeps going missing on me.

The title pretty much covers it. As I'm working the marker for where I am in the timeline keeps going missing on me. If I shrink my window from full screen it will come back, but i have a big screen and I have it to take advantage of the real estate.

The monitor is 2560 x 1440. I'm running Win8.1 viva bootcamp on a 15" macbook pro with Nvida graphics.

I love you Fusion360 but still how much longer we will have to wait for the fix? History marker is integral to the F360 workflow so it is beyond me how this bug is still around. As it happens with any bit bigger project timeline, things are getting crazy.

I really admire you guys working on official support though, it must be super frustrating to find workarounds for the bugs which do not get fixed at all.

I also wonder what's the purpose of us users writing down all that feedback and endless survey after, I do not see much happening around things reported months or years ago even.

I've just hit this bug also.

When i got to a point in the timeline (maybe in the 75-80 time slices range), the marker disappeared.

Playing a little bit:

Doesn't matter if I close and re-open the file.

If I shrink my window width down the to point where the timeline scroll bar appears... when I slide the scroll bar right... Voila, marker appears.  But then if I stretch my window back to its normal width that doesn't require a scroll bar... it instantly disappears again.  It "seems" like Fusion doesn't like that I'm working on a wide monitor that I don't need a scroll bar until I hit over 100 timeline entries and it loses the marker unless there is a scroll bar when over 75ish entries

Yeah this just started happening to me and I can't figure out a way to get the marker back. It's extremely frustrating and takes away a good deal of functionality. My marker will be there if I close and reopen the file, but as soon as I activate a subcomponent it goes away permanently.

Have you tried creating groups in your time line? (highlight several
sequential features, right click, "create group") I had this issue before I
knew about groups, but since I started using groups to keep the time line
from getting crazy long, I've never had it happen again. Maybe that'll help.

Thanks for the feedback. We are working to fix this current regression.

To work around:

1. Right click anywhere in the timeline and pick "move history marker here".

2. Use the player controls to step forward and backward in the timeline. These are the buttons next to the play button on the timeline.

Just had this bug appear, with very reproducible behavior. When I open any file with a long timeline the marker is present and behaves normally. When I press the "Move to Beginning" button the marker disappears, and does not return no matter what I do. Also, I'm unable to use the "Roll History Marker Here" functionality unless I'm selecting a timeline object that is part of a component that's already been created. For timeline objects of components that haven't been made yet a right click menu won't even pop-up.

Would appreciate a fix or workaround for this beyond just not using the Move to Beginning button.

Thanks

I tried this, but unfortunately it did not work. (I'm on PC, and I'm not sure what the sequences is that causes it. My timeline is very long, though).

As of the latest update this has started happening to me too. The only way I've found to solve it (temporarily) is to close and reopen a model. Looking forward to an update! It's a surprisingly big wrench in my typical design flow.

Thanks for the feedback. We are working to fix this currently, but it's not clear when the fix will be ready and tested.

Here are ways to work around it, hopefully this is easier than constantly closing and opening the design.

Method 1. Right click anywhere in the timeline and pick "move history marker here".

Method 2. Use the player controls to step forward and backward in the timeline. These are the buttons next to the play button on the timeline.

This too started happening to me since the most recent update. Files are perfectly fine for a while, then it starts happening randomly switching between components. The above mentioned fix does not work. For a couple days, restarting the software resolved the issue. Now, not even that is working. So that's why I'm here on the forums. I really hope this doesn't get much worse - it's rendering the software (and product development) near-useless.

It also seems to start happening when I roll all the way to the beginning or end... <| or |>

I am on PC, working with a Quadro. Seems like hardware isn't a factor here. The following caps are after a fresh restart and reload of the file, then stepping through the timeline.

Thanks for the feedback.

We know what is wrong with the code. We are working to fix this bug currently, but it's not clear when the fix will be ready and tested.

Please try the posted workarounds and let me know if that helps.

Any update? I'm super grateful for the startup license so I'm happy to put up with some bugs, but this is the most time consuming one I experience, requiring me to close and reopen some very large projects several times a day (on a surface book, it isn't a quick procedure).

@jordanJM463  I cannot comment on efforts to fix the remaining timeline marker case, it must be the one you are seeing.

Rather than spending minutes closing and opening designs, have you tried any of the posted workflows? It only takes a second to right click on the timeline and use the move marker command. Also, the play controls will step the marker.

I ask this because these controls were not added as workarounds for this bug. They are intended to provide more ways to move the marker other than dragging it. Dragging the marker is just one of several ways to move it.

Can you describe why these methods don't work for you? I'm interested in passing this information to the team that works on timeline. It will help to show that this situation is not tolerable for customers, but I need to understand why the other methods don't work. Should we take them out?

Thanks,

I did have an issue the other day where the right click -> roll history marker combined with the play controls didn't quite provide equivalent functionality. I don't remember specifically (apologies) but some features in the timeline don't have the "roll history marker here" option, and I think there were some issues where I was working inside several components sequentially. Sorry I can't remember more details. The play controls would have helped a bit but it's also time consuming to move one feature at a time, possibly causing re-computes.

And if I'm being honest, I experience quite a few bugs that disable functionality, but reset either after re-starting fusion or after closing and re-opening a project.  When I notice one of these bugs pop up I get a little anxious about what functionality I may have just lost, so I go for a clean reset. With the timeline issue I get a little anxious that it's impacting some other functionality so I just simply reset.

Also while I have your attention, it's not worth making its own post but it's too easy to accidentally drag a feature in the timeline and cause a big re-compute and a ton of warnings. I don't know why but sometimes it seems accidentally dragging even one pixel can cause a timeline change. I know it's unrelated to this thread, sorry!

A different issue related to the history marker: When I'm working in a component and use the "go to end of timeline" button, the marker goes the right place and remains visible, but Fusion 360 scrolls the timeline so that only one feature is visible, even if the entire timeline could be displayed. Is this a known issue or should I document it in more detail?

I would document it in detail. I've seen that as well.

It happened to me again. It is 2020 now, and the problem from 2016 is still not fixed. And, by the way, even if I make the window smaller, the marker does not appear.

I noticed this happened when I was trying to use the history review(I mean the right arrows).

I'm now getting the same issue. It wasn't happening to me until recently. My design has grown pretty significantly and the history is quite extensive. When the design was smaller it didn't happen.

Very frustrating when my history timeline is wider than the screen. With the history marker I was able to pull it around. Now I have to move to the end and then try the right click thing to adjust. This is supposed to be the power of this software. How can a software bug exist for more than 3 years? I would be fired if I allowed a code bug to go on that long. Starting to wonder if I've made a mistake with Fusion.
