Help with tool path and correct bit for an engrave

Hello,

I am having an issue engraving the letters on the attached model. Basically the letters need to be engraved in a board so that a 1/4'' dowel with a rounded tip can be inserted by a child to "trace" the letters. I am trying to use a 1/4'' rounded bit but fusion says that the tool cannot be used. Am I using the right bit for this, and/or the right tool path? My file will be Screen Shot 2021-08-07 at 10.41.09 AM.pngattached. I Appreciate any advise on this.

For some reason it is not giving me the option to attach the f3d file, so if you want to see it I can email it to you

Hi,

Select Trace instead of Engrave.

Engrave uses 2 lines that can have different spacing, so the depth depends on the spacing.

Router: V-Bit

1. create single line text > rightclick > explode
2. Manufacture > 2-D > Trace
3. select rounded bit and define milling depth

Try clicking where it says Reply to Topic at the bottom of the page and you should get the option to attach files.

Engrave is only used to V carve using a chamfer tool. You might be better off using a single line font then trace using a ball cutter.

Single line fonts are at the top of the list in the font list.

The problem is the overall design is already done by the customer as a step file, so I dont think I can change the font

@g-andresen its definitely a step in the right direction, however it looks like the tool is taking off material all around the letters as well for some reason Screen Shot 2021-08-07 at 2.00.43 PM.png

Hi,

Did you see the recommendation to the single line font from me and @HughesTooling ?
It won't work with your font.
There are no sketches in your file.

Therefore, you can only influence the font if you recreate it with a single line font.
In addition, the file lacks a history to be able to follow the development.

@g-andresen @HughesTooling I think ive almost got it, Im just not sure how to make it cut the trace a little bit deeper. It looks pretty shallow. I cant seemed to find the right click/ explode option.

A 3d Pocket toolpath will work for your original file.  Unfortunately, your 1/4" tool is too large for some of the segments (Note the B).  You'll have to use a different tool or modify the file.  The Press/Pull command will probably work for modifying the file.  In the screencast, I mistakenly left the Stock to Leave setting, so the cuts aren't as clean as they should be (Corrected in the attached file).  Experiment with the Stepover and Stepdown settings (smaller is better) to get cleaner paths.

You probably noticed the lack of an attached file in the previous post.  Someone has been mucking with the forum software again.  Clicking on the Reply button located inside a post allows a screencast to be included, but not a file.  Clicking on the Reply button located at the bottom outside of a post allows a file to be included, but not a screencast.  Someone should have a word with the mucker.

p.s. You can also lie about the diameter of the tool by defining it as slightly smaller than the width of the narrowest segment.  This will make all of the other segments larger, so it may work better to have separate toolpaths for the narrow segments.
