Help with spline mirror

Ok,

First off I'm a total noob! Been watching tutorials as much as possible, which help but it always seems like when I try these things out, I end up with certain issues I cant overcome.

End goal: trying to make a loft from two different sketches. One sketch is just a circle, the other sketch is a weird shaped circle made by mirroring a spline I made.

First off, when I make half the spline, then mirror it...it appears that it never connects at the centerline. ie. I cant seem to move the shape up or down on the sketch plane, or I cant project it to a surface. Also when I hover over the outside line of the shape, it shows that it is in 2 pieces. So when I go to create a loft by connecting these two shapes, it gives me an error cause I have to select 2 lines on one plane!?!? How the hell do I connect the two mirrored splines??? Or is there a totally different way I should be going about this?

Thanks for your help and input.

Hi @Geboy37,

Try to create the loft with the Patch tool and let me know if it's working.

Cheers / Ben

Hi @Geboy37

I have produced a screen cast of what I think you are trying to do.

Let me know if this helps.

John

Thanks guys for your replies!

I figured it out...after a bunch of fiddling. Turns out I was trying to sculpt the loft between two sketched surfaces. I guess this is a no no?

Anyway I tried just doing a loft within the sketching tools, and that worked, I just had to convert the it so I could sculpt it afterwards.

JohnKLUQK, thanks for the video. This is exactly what I ended up doing.

BeyondForce, I have yet to use the patch tool, I will have to look into it and see how they work. Thanks!

I still have an issue with a particular splined sketch I made. I need to move it in reference to the rest of my model, but It will not let me do anything with it??? There must be some sort of constraint on it, but i'm too much of a nooby to know what to look for.

Thanks again!

@Geboy37,

We gonna need a screencast to see the problem.

Ben.

I can highly recommend you watch @Beyondforce tutorials. Very enlightening.

Ok,

Here is 2 pics of my sketches that I am wanting to connect.

Also you can see in the second pic how I went about making my spline shape. It is a port in an engine that I wanted to model off an actual design. So I took those measurements at those angles to get as close as I could. Is there a better way to do this? By doing this did I somehow put my drawling into some weird constraints? Anyway, If I go to edit that sketch I cannot move that sketch in anyway. Its like its locked into place.

Also, Is there a way I can save that particular sketch, so I can drop it into another project?

Thanks guys!

Oh, and I'll make sure to check out Beyondforces tutorials. thanks

Could you make a screencast? It will help to see what are doing and the errors.

Hi @Geboy37

Apologies for the delay. Time zones are getting in the way.

I have attached another little screen cast highlighting what I consider a mild annoyance in Fusion 360. The issue is when you place a node on the axes origin point.

It takes two steps to then "un-coincidise" and "Unfix" that particular node at the axes origin. Perhaps this is what you are experiencing.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys, the internet at work has been down since Friday.

Thanks johnKLUQK for that screen cast. It appears that that must be my issue, but for some reason I cannot do what you are showing in that screen cast. I must have something strange going on, or a hidden red dot linked to it that I cant see. Anyway, I'm just going to start over and see if I develop the same problem again.

Thanks again,

And I will attempt to do a screen cast if I run into the same problem.

In Edit Sketch, copy the whole lot and paste and then immediately move the pasted copy away from the axes origin. That should work, instead of re-doing the sketch. However, if are going to do it again, make sure you do not place your start point (or any point) on the axes origin point. Saves a lot of hassle later on. As I said earlier, this issue of the origin point in Fusion is a mild irritation.
