Help modeling a kayak

Hi everybody,

I work with fusion for a little while now but mostly for technical drawings. Therefore I'm pretty new to t-splines and free forms.

For my next project I want to model a kayak. To get used to t-splines and free forms I thought it would be a good idea to remodel an existing kayak so I can uses different canvases from different perspectives and practice different techniques.

The object of interest: (for now I only concentrate on the outer shell and without all that tiny details and the seat)

What I got so far:

1. I managed to load all canvas, scale them and align them so that they match up in all different perspectives

2. Thanks to the symmetry of the kayak I only need to draw one half and later on just mirror the part on the according axis

3. Started and tried different ways to position and connect t-splines but I'm a bit stuck now and all I do is trying around but everything looks not very right to me.

Can somebody who's experienced in working with t-spline and free forms giving me a hint on how he/she would start modeling this object?

Thanks in advance,

Stefan

Hi @Anonymous,

If you are new to T-SPlines, I suggest that you go to the learning section and review some of the material on Sculpt.

http://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?learn=sculpt

Regarding your specific project.  I suggest you start with a Cube or a QuadBall and get the basic shape and then start refining the shape using Edit Form. Always start with as light a base shape as you can.  It is easy to add detail as you need it.  There is a symmetry option for sculpt objects that will allow you to work with symmetry.

Hope that helps.

Hi Colin,

I already started working with the form tool and I also started with a box first. But I think your suggestion using the QuadBall works out much better. I also figured out on my own that having more datails (faces) at the beginning also meas more work to maintain them so starting with little detail is definitely a good tip 😉

I will try different things and maybe show some progress.

In the meanwhile thinks for the quick help.

cheers! Stefan
