Help Getting Text on the Surface of a Solid

I am trying to get my text to be on the surface of a solid cylinder for an engraving project. The text is being shown thru the center of the cylinder and I don't know how to move it onto the outside face.

Help Please

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous

Have you tried Project to Surface?

I tried project to surface. It will allow me to select the outside of the cylinder but I cannot select the text. I blanked out the solid and just tried selecting the text to move but it wont allow me to do anything with it.

You guys should have hands on training seminars.

Thanks for looking

BTW, do you want the text to be extruded on the cylinder in a certain way?
I'm asking because, you cannot do anything with any projected sketch on a curved surface (as for now)!
If you want the text to be extruded on the cylinder surface, then create the text (from the inside or outside) and extrude it.

I can think of several ways to make this work. None of them are simple. It would be awesome for you to add an EMBOSS feature to the IdeaStation. Inventor has one...

I don't think that sketch text can be used as a splitting tool or this would be much MUCH easier.

Anyway...

Here is one way:

1. Go to patch environment

2. Extrude the text as a surface feature through the wall of the cyliner

3. Return to model and use SPLIT FACE - the surfaces of the text would be your splitting tools (make sure you select any interior groups like on the R)

4. Use PRESS-PULL to slide the newly created text faces in or out. Be warned: The text will retain it's surface curve ratio as you bring it in or out - meaning non-normal edges.

Here is another way:

1. EXTRUDE the text into a new body.

2. Hide the cylinder

3. Create a sketch on the surface of the text

4. Use PROJECT - INTERSECT on the text

5. Use SPLIT FACE using sketch.

6. Use PRESS-PULL to slide the faces back or forward - same warning on normal lines.

**this method needs a bunch of features to work right. It also creates a negative image on the back side - which can be combined back to one solid when completed and it will dissolve**

Here is another way:

1. Go to the patch environment

2. Use OFFSET to create a surface at the depth of you required engraving.

3. Return to model and EXTRUDE the text outside the cylinder

4. This step can be accomplished multiple ways - this creates the fewest browser entries - Create a SKETCH on one of the flat faces of the cylinder. Create a CIRCLE at the same diameter as your surface offset from earlier (you could project if you wanted). Then hide the main cylinder body. EXTRUDE the new sketch circle to clear away much of the text features.

5. Use the COMBINE tool to remove the text bodies from the main cylinder.

There are others...

FYI, Here is the Emboss Idea Station entry:  Emboss Feature.  Feel free to vote for it!

Thanks I appreciate the help!

When I follow the instructions I am able to apply the text onto the surface. The text appears to be flat and not following the contour of the cylinder. I posted code, and it is lacking the Z axis movements that would be required to mill around the cylinder.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Can you post your model?

Some how I was able to make it work not sure I could do it again. LOL.

Whenever I extruded the text I oversized it so it was above the cylinder when I push/pulled it back down into the cylinder the outline of the text was still showing above the cylinder but it was also engraved into the cylinder at depth. When I tried to post code I guess it was still hitting on the raised text outline. I started deleting things until I had only the cylinder and the engraved text. I tried posting code again and this time it posted code to the radius of the cylinder.

I hope that make sense! I really dont think I could do it again.

Here the file after I deleted the raised text.
