Fusion 360 or Nastran in-CAD?

hi, we're Washington State Ferries / Vessel Design and in our department we have both structural panel issues like vibration, stress and buckling analysis and at the same time CFD question like rudder-hull interaction, propeller wake...

Now we have SimMech 2017 installed. I was wondering in 2018 should we switch to Fusion 360 or Nastran in-CAD to cover all these areas ?

Many thanks, Ali

Hey Ali,

First off, CFD is not in Fusion 360 at this time, so thats an easy "no" to THAT question.

Next, for the structural panel analysis, we do have a static and a (linear) buckling study that you can use, but vibration might pose some difficulties...it just depends on what you mean. We cannot do random vibration studies at this time, but using a frequency analysis you can gain an understanding on the resonant frequencies and mode shapes.

I'd recommend you get a trial of Fusion 360 and run some tests. Thats sometimes the best way to clear up these types of questions.

Cheers!

Hi Ali,

Here is a link to a video that may help you with your decision as you transition from Autodesk Simulation Mechanical:

I hope it helps.

Hi @MOTEVAA,

I have a background in CFD so I wanted to add to the comments of Tyler and Aaron.  I know Simulation Mechanical does not handle the CFD analyses that you mentioned.  If you are using Autodesk CFD there is a direct link from Inventor to export/import your model.  With Fusion you would need to export a local copy and then create a new design study from it manually.  I hope that aids in your decision making process.

Todd

Thanks Aaron,

Well, for our structural panels we first do natural frequency modal check just to know in what frequencies we might have problem. Then we do a Frequency Response or a Transient Modal Superposition for the forced vibration (boundaries of plate under forced acceleration) to generate the maximum deflections. So we shall know how to approach to fix them.

So we have choice for Nastran in-CAD and Fusion for these sort of analysis. I'm still curious which one you recommend better?

hi Todd,

Thanks, yes I heard yesterday in the webinar that Autodesk CFD Motion would be a good option. I was hoping to have them all in one package...

Hi Ali,

I hear you there, but currently the only CFD offering we have is Autodesk CFD (the solver has 3 flavors but it is all the same software, don't be fooled by the downloads).  I actually work out of the CFD development office, so I know they are working on ways to get the technology into other software, but I wouldn't expect it soon.  I'll refer to the other guys on the mechanical simulation recommendation.  From what I'm hearing Nastran In-CAD may be a better fit with closer functionality, but let's see what the other guys have to say.  Some of my lacking experience could lead me to believe that we can't do something that we actually can (for instance a drop test could be performed with the Event Simulation study type).  If fusion can fit your needs it is at a very attractive price point.

Regards,

Todd
