First sketch tutorial, Equal constraint working backwards?

Anonymous

I'm trying to do the first Sketch tutorial, but, when he uses the Equal constraint on the right end, and then the left end, his right end matches to his left end... however, no matter how I do it, the left end always matches the right end, instead.

What am I missing? Because he just jumps to it.

That's a good question, maybe they have changed something since this video has been made. I get the same results.

Maybe @Aaron.Magnin could answer your question?

I ended up throwing the whole thing out and starting from scratch... I did everything exactly the same, exactly like he does it in the video (which is precisely what I did last time), and this time the Equal constraint is working like he uses it.

I have absolutely zero... idea... why.

No matter what, the first line that you chose, that the line that you want to change!

I hope Aaron have an answer for that.

Actually it only visually does that, if you dimension the line on the left the line on the right will update correctly. So it's not that anything is wrong you just haven't gone far enough. If you continue on in the tutorial you will get the correct results.

I figured this out once I got into the modeling tutorial... but I seriously spent two hours trying to work out what I was doing wrong because what that constraint does and how it operates wasn't even touched on. I had no clue. I thought maybe I'd done something wrong and was completely screwing it up.

I understand everything your saying and I agree the training could be a lot better. The guys behind the training are working to make it better. Lets make sure @Aaron.Magnin knows about this.

I always thought, that the first line you mark, that's the line that change, like in Inventor!

"I always thought, that the first line you mark, that's the line that change, like in Inventor!"

It's like that in Solidworks too....

In my opinion that's how it should be. I think the problem here is two fold:

1) Getting the intended results when using a tool. The video clearly shows this is broken now.

2) Training explaining things better for new users.

Both of these in my opinion need fixed.

In my tests, the equal constraint will use the first selection to drive the second. Not sure if this was changed, but I don't know why they would have.

Is that what everyone else is seeing/experiencing?

Yes the results are the opposite of what is shown in the training....

@Aaron.Magnin

I don't care one way or the other as it has zero effect on my workflow, but once again a video doesn't explain this good enough for a new user then the video doesn't match what's happening in Fusion so they become further lost, frustrated and confused. The amount of posts from new users confused by lack of information and out of date videos is starting to stack up...

Just thought ADSK might want to know about this....

Oh, this became a much bigger deal than I expected. Yeah, I'm a complete newb and I didn't realize that it would tie them together so adjusting the dimension of either would adjust both... I was just parroting what the video did, but there's a time or two where it just kinda skims ahead and I had to work out what happened by the changes on the screen, such as where the horizontal/vertical constraints and equal constraints were applied.

What threw me was that what I saw was not emulating what the video showed and I got mega hung up on that, just because I didn't realize it was adjustable til later.

Thanks for not making me feel like a complete failure, though! This is exceptionally encouraging!

Hmmm. Not far off a year later and the tutorial video is still the same. New user here so still confused. Perhaps there is some youtube video's will explain things better?
