Failed to Open

Today I'm getting a host of Failed to Open errors when trying to load my projects.

The Data Panel show my projects just fine. However if I double click on them I get an error message (see bottom).

If I click on the "i" icon and chose and older version I get the same error messages.

I thought all the project files were cloud based, but it appears they are stored locally on the computer. If I follow the pathname and delete the project file it doesn't appear that Fusion 360 is loading it from the cloud, my local file reappears.

Any idea what the "other" program locking the file might be?

Hi @Anonymous,

Just to check - are you in offline mode by any chance? I believe that path points to the offline cache data that is stored when you go offline and try to access those files. If you are online, does going into offline mode and then back online seem to help? If not, can you send me your diagnostic log files (found in the Help menu in the top-right corner) as well as a screenshot of your data panel. Thanks!

Hi James,

Today I'm able to load my files without the error message. Seemed to be an issue yesterday afternoon, but all is well today.

I did verify yesterday that I was online, and not if offline mode. Does Fusion 360 always keep a local file while working on it? I'm guessing that there must have been a glitch where the app or the system were locking down file access.

If it happens again I'll send you the log file (attached is the log from the current session not having the problem). Thanks for the help.

Hi @Anonymous,

That's great to hear! To my knowledge, Fusion creates cached data for the files you work on up to a certain amount of time (which can be toggled in your preferences). And sounds like a plan! Definitely let me know if it comes back and we can take another look.

I've narrowed down the steps to recreate this problem.

  1. Launch AutoDesk Fusion 360
  2. Log In
  3. Get prompted that Fusion 360 needs to be updated and needs to restart when finished.
  4. Open your project to work on while background updating is happening.
  5. When you get the message that the app is updated you'll notice that you get the Fail to Open errors with the projects being locked.

Solution:

Wait for update to finish. Quit Fusion 360, Relaunch Fusion 360 and then proceed to open your projects to work on.

Additional Info:

In the TechShop environment they use Deep Freeze Cloud which wipes user changes off the main drive when you restart the PC, so I've been running into this problem each day I come in to use these machines.

The only solution is to have an admin unlock the machines, update Fusion 360 and then relock the machines.

If any QA/Engineers/Product Managers are reading this:

- Please push forward on your Browser only version of Fusion 360 that isn't tied to an installed app.

- Please auto update Fusion 360 on launch rather than after a validated login - it would save a lot of time on classroom installs.

- Please put app version number and date in the splash screen during launch so that users can see the current version.

thanks,

Stephen

@Anonymous - Good comments and suggestions.  As for point #1, the browser version, we're actively working on it!  For point #2, I talked to the team and they have a story (for internal purposes it's UP-26406) to allow Fusion to update without a user being logged in... while I don't have an ETA, it's documented and in the backlog.  I'm still looking into feasibility of point #3.
