Failed to import DXF

I created a DXF of a gear from the Involute Spur Gear Builder. However, when I tried to upload the DXF file, I just got an error that import failed. Can anyone at Autodesk look at the DXF and figure out why? Better yet, fix the bug? 🙂

Hi robertbaruch,

I checked your DXF file, Fusion couldn't parse the contents in it, Fusion actually uses AutoCAD module to read the DXF file, but couldn't parse the contents in it.

The DXF file contians "OpenJsCad" tag and contains formats that not align with AutoCAD DXF file format, so couldn't be opened.

I manually fixed the file by converting it to align with AutoCAD 2010 DXF file format. Attached the file. There are more than 8102 points in the file, so it's slow in Fusion sketch for now.

It would be great if you can share some info about how this file is generated, so we could try to handle it.

There have been a few post like this, problems importing DXF files from gear generators. Have you got another program you could open the file in first then resave.

I've attached the file exported through Rhino. It loads into Fusion but it's real slow to work with because it's made up of lots of line segments. What are the specks for the gear, there are some gear generation scripts included with Fusion that make the teeth using splines that might work better.

Mark.

Hi Mark,

I don't have a program that could open the file in first and auto correct it, instead I was open the DXF file and manually edit it. If we find it's a common issue such as DXF files created by some programs and doesn't align with AutoCAD/Fusion, we could try to create one programe as you mentioned or other ways to help with this.

I tried the DXF you posted, yes, it's quite slow to work with it in Fusion sketch right now. There is performance issue when handle these big number of line segments in sketch. It's good idea to use spline instead of too much line segments, we could also try some optimization in order to improve performance.

There are several posts about this, current just haven't been top in our backlog yet, might be we could add these on the ideastation?  Not that they have to be, but it helps us to make the case for things like this, if they are there and get lots of votes.

Hi Lori

There's an odd DXF file in this post.http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-and-documentation/how-to-create-a-face-on-a-imported-dxf/td-p/5...

For some reason Fusion doesn't like the splines, can you take a look.

Thank Mark

Thanks Mark for figuring it out! I added some comments, currently couldn't support this type of spline (G1 discontinous), it's a known issue (internal bug as FUS-15171), will try to resolve it sonner. Keep you updated.

Here's the gear generator website. I used these parameters:

Circular pitch: 320.79 (mm)

Pressure Angle: 20

Clearance: 0.05

Backlash: 0.05

Profile shift: 0

Teeth: 60

Center hold diameter: 1

Same here with a single spline file.

Unfortunately working with a polyline would be sub-optimal for me.

Here's the file. It's direct from a surfboard shaping program which is open source; the code can be changed if needed to fix the DXF or is this a remaining F360 bug?

By the way, the import error should be a lot more verbose.

@Anonymous I tried opening your file with Rhino3d and QCad and neither program open the file correctly. I've never had Rhino fail to import a DXF before so there is something odd with this file, Rhino opened the files in this thread OK and it doesn't normally have any problems importing splines.
