Extrude profile can include projected curves

Please let me know if I am missing the solution to this one or reposting an old topic, but it seems like a limitation at the moment. (I'm running fusion on windows 10)

 

I projected a 3D piece of geometry into a 2D sketch. This creates a purple curve. I then drew some other lines in the sketch to create a closed profile, and these lines show up as black/blue depending on constraints (i have this "preview" functionality enabled). After closing the sketch, I want to create a simple extrusion from this profile, but the extrude dialog doesnt recognize this as a compatible profile for an extrude.

I'm sure there's a good reason that projected curves are purple and behave differently than curves I manually draw in a sketch, but can we please have a way to convert or toggle a projected curve into this type of sketch geometry that appears as black/blue and can be used for extruding? It seems to me like this can be a really powerful tool for modeling complex and curved shapes.

 

(I'm hoping it's reasonable to expect this to be a parametric type of operation, where I dont have to break a link after projecting etc..., or try to approximate the projected curve by tracing over with a new spline or something.)

That should work, are you sure the profile is closed. It should be shaded like this if it a closed profile.

There's an a app here called Sketch Checker that can help find open sketches.

I will try sketch checker, but i expect it will tell me its not closed. The fact that fusion doesnt recognize this as a closed section, which seemed like it was due to the projected curve, is my complaint.  I was careful to select the end points of the projected curve, and tried this many times.

 

This type of thing should be in the idea station because it seemed like a missing feature that could be important to others - however it now appears to be a bug if you were able to do a similar thing.

A quick way to see if and where the problem is, draw 2 small diameter circles on the 2 corners. I have had one problem with a projected edge caused by the end of the curve doubling back on its self in that case I was able to trim the curve back a small amount to get a valid closed curve.

I wont keep posting here, but i thought i would close this out in case anyone else sees this.

 

Since you seemed to be able to extrude from a projected curce, then what i am experiencing is definately a bug. And i will look into the best place to post it.

 

Here is what happens when i run sketch checker on the troublesome 2d sketch (and note that in this image i unhid the previous sketch of the thing i was trying to project, which is a circular arc on a cylindrical surface. thus it doesnt double back on itself, but may be some sort of tricky indeterminate thing?):

And here is what happens when i draw circles to try to rule out issues with end points not aligning, or small bits of spline weirdness near the ends of the projected curve:

For some reason, it just wont let me do it with this curve.

Mike,

 

That wasn't a solution to this problem - it was a link to an unresolved forum post not classified as solution provided where a user had difficulty with imported dxf geometry. It may or may not be related as that issue was an imported G1 discontinuous curve, and in my case im working with a circular arc projected onto a cylindrical surface at 90 degrees which shouldn't create anything like that. Either way I'm not sure my issue should be considered solved.

 

I'm going to move this discussion to the general forum since its definitely not about a new idea any more.

 

Over there, i posted the fusion file.
