Extrude not creating edges?

Hi guys,

Dabbled with Fusion 360 over the years, mainly in the toolpathing areas, so actually sketching and designing pretty new to me. I'm trying to use the sheet metal tools to make some bent sheet metal parts for my boat, but running into some difficulties.

I started with a new component, and drew a sketch, used flange to create the body. I need my design to be angled, to match the angle of the boat, but after I do an Extrude Cut - I find that I cant use the flange tools anymore. I think this is because a lack of edges on the cut faces.

Non-cut (note edges)

Is there an easy way to add in edges? Am I doing something wrong here?

F3D is attached. Appreciate any info or nudges in the right direction. F3D is attached.

When you did that diagonal extrude, you have inadvertently cut the vertical section on an angle, which is not possible in sheet metal because all cuts need to be perpendicular to the sheet (not true entirely as there are 3d laser cutters that can cut chamfers but for simplicity, its easier to design to perpendicular).

So i made a new component where the workflow was to start with the correct trapezoidal base shape and then trim two of the corners and add some angles to the opposite other two corners to achieve your desired outcome.

See attached screenshot showing your body (ghost) and my new one.

Hi Ned,

Really appreciate the quick turn around here. That was actually my original approach, however, I couldn't quite figure out the best way to trim off the little triangular tabs, or add them back on really. I will take a close look at your example and get some practice in.

Again, really appreciated. I've been mulling this over for too long!

Cheers,

Matt

Just as an update to this thread and adding another potential solution to anyone that may be interested, this could of been done another way.

I could of carried on using what I had done as above, but instead of trying to use the flange tool, I could of used the 'Unfold' tool, sketched what I needed to on those top faces (instead of using 2 sided flanges etc), extruded and then 'Refolded' to have those incorporated into the design.

Thanks again to Ned for his assistance and offering another way to think about the problem.

Cheers,
Matt
