Extrude New Body vs Join

What is the best practice for extruding New Body vs Join? In my design adventures as someone who is new to Fusion I created extrusions with New Body.  This allowed me to turn off various items so they would not interfere with subsequent steps.  When I tried to export as a STL not all the parts exported so I went back and edited the extrusions to be a join instead. 

Can someone clarify the best practice?  Did I mess up and not select all the bodies I wanted for the export?

Even if the bodys are not connected, if you export like this, all parts that are currently visible will be saved in stl.
