Extrude goes in wrong direction

I had gripes with this for years (and Solidworks never had this issue before I swapped), but finally caught it on camera. In my mind, a + should always default to creating a new body and - should cut into an adjacent one. I thought maybe it was just always following the Triad and axis directions, but clearly not today! Look where Z+ is on the top right corner and the direction of my extrusion.

so, what is the logic behind it?

Hi

Where did you create the sketch?

The +/- signs indicate the normal direction of the sketch plane.

This screenshot does not explain the definition of a sketch surface.

I can get the same if I sketch on the bottom of a body rather than on one of the document planes.

That's exactly right.

And it makes sense - the positive direction of the operation is the normal direction of the face on which the sketch is based.

Ok, i guess that makes sense in an "all use case" sort of way.
Thanks. Looks like Ill keep starting it with the arrow drag to ensure its the right direction.
