executing sweep with variable size across path

Hello,

I'm trying to replicate a climbing hold to better understand the sweep function. Please see the climbing hold picture attached. I've made the cutout of the main part of the body. However I'm stuck in 'cutting' the groves in the hold on the left and right had sides. I've tried using the sweep function, however I cant seem to control the size of the cut along the sweep path. 

Would anybody be able to guide me on how this cut could be done? Maybe through the loft function?

Hi Andrew,

Try "sculpting"!

Although I have little experience with it, I was able to model this.

At YT you will find various tutorials on sculpting with fusion.
