What font are you using for your letters? Could you possibly share an image of what your result is? The example below is a simple extrude using an Arial font.

@Anonymous, when you say "engrave" are you talking about actual CAM engraving, or just modeling the effect, as @thom.tremblay illustrates?  For CAM engraving, you probably want just the centerline font, which are indicated by .shx in the font name:

but, if you just want to model the effect, use a regular font, and use Extrude to cut into a solid.

In the Model workspace, there are two extrude commands on the context menu.  The blue icon will extrude solid and the reddish one will extrude a surface.

In the CAM workspace, there are two engraving toolpaths.  Trace will just follow a line.  Engrave will mill between two lines.  V bits are generally used for both.

remember what @etfrench  said about single lines!

SHX Fonts only work with the trace-tool not with engrave!

First day, I have a lid solid.  Would like to "engrave" text into it for later 3d printing.  Have no idea how to extrude my text into the lid.  I thought I would start with something easy LOL.  I have done extrudes on flat objects.

Simply extrude the text into the lid.

p.s. Go through the learning tutorials and videos.

Perhaps try using a "pocket" operation and selecting the text.

I've also had some issues when I want to engrave (either vcarve or pocket) certain features. And these were solved by making the text on its own sketch. Then selecting the whole sketch as the target geometry for a given operation.

If you already have the geometry modeled out as a pocket, that might throw off an engrave/vcarve operation and lead you to only have the edges cut, instead of the whole letter.

Another idea is to try making your model such that the text is NOT extruded as actual geometry, and instead, exists only as a sketch on the surface you want to engrave. Then use the above method to engrave/pocket the text and just set your desired depth of cut.
