Emboss tool??

I've been trying to emboss this hat but don't know what I'm doing wrong.  I make a plane with my text and I can select it when in the emboss tool but I can't select the face that I want to emboss.  When not in the emboss tool I can select the face but not during the emboss process.  What am I missing??  Does emboss only work on flat surfaces??  Please help.  Thanks

Emboss works on "regular" geometric features such as flat, cylinders and conics but does not recognize spline surfaces such as yours.  You can use an alternative method as I have.  If you want the thickness to be more or less, edit the 4th feature from the right in the timeline.

Now knowing that I can only emboss on a flat surface and not on a compound curve helps alot.  I can extrude a cylinder inside the hat and give me a flat surface to emboss from but it only gets me a cutout of the letters not a pushout of the letters due to my compound curve on the outside.  I will work on figuring out a work around.   Thanks!!
