Emboss: selecting & assigning materials

I'm relatively new to Fusion here, and can't figure out how to do something that I would expect to be easy. I've attached a screenshot of the project, which is a 3D-printed container for some letter tiles for a game.

The raised lines above the letters need to be in a different material (filament) from the main body of the container. They run along a curved surface so I can't just sketch and Extrude. Emboss works well here for the geometry, but then I run into a problem: I can't find a way to easily select the embossed geometry to assign a material to it, short of dragging the material onto one face at a time. I'd expect to be able to do any of the following:

  1. Define a Selection Set and apply the material to it. I can define the Selection Set but as far as I can tell there's no way to use it when applying materials.
  2. Project the sketch onto the relevant faces and then Extrude to a new body.
  3. Tell Emboss to generate a new body.
  4. Select the newly-embossed geometry and easily separate it from the main body. (This is technically possible but then involves a bunch of work closing holes.)

Some version of this issue (identifying/separating pieces of geometry when the separation involves more than a planar surface or single face) keeps coming up for me and I've not found an answer. What am I missing?

Thanks!

If you still can't figure it out -

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

@g-andresen This worked perfectly, thank you! Quick summary for anyone else who stumbles on this thread:

  1. Before you do your Emboss (or rewind the timeline), go to Surface → Create → Offset.
    1. Select the face(s) at which you'll want to separate (i.e., those on which the new geometry will be embossed).
    2. Offset by 0, creating a new body with a copy of those faces.
  2. Hide the new body if necessary.
  3. Emboss as before.
  4. Solid → Modify → Split Body
    1. Body to Split: The original body (with newly-embossed geometry)
    2. Splitting Tool: The new body
  5. Done.

I need to do something very slightly different, namely I want the debossed form. I need the characters to be a separate object that I can assign a different filament color to, so it fills in the characters but leaves the upper surface smooth. The split Body doesn't seem to handle this case.

Thank you! I thought I had to do a Paste New to make an independent copy, and that option wasn't there.

I hadn't realized that bodies can be copied and pasted like normal! That will help now and then.

Problem solved!
