embedded text around a cylinder

I'm sure this can be done, but I'm not sufficiently advanced with Fusion 360 to figure it out, unfortunately.

I'm making a medal for a friend, who is going to achieve a major milestone in a couple of weeks. I've got most of it done, but I'm stuck with the last part. The medal is shaped like a coin, and like many coins it should have text sunken into the cylindrical surface at the edge. Ideally, and also like a coin, this cylindrical edge should be milled as well, but that is a secondary problem.

The font I'm using is not a standard font (it's Celtic, since he's an Irishman) so, since Fusion 360 can't find it in my font library, I've made a dxf file with outline characters using Illustrator. This is fine for the front and back faces, where I can import them as sketches.

But I can't attach them, and nor can I make a regular sketch, to/on the cylindrical surface at the edge of the medal.

Obviously I can attach the file as a decal, but I can't use that to make an extrusion (with negative depth).

Am I going the wrong way about this? What is the best method to attach a dxf file (or anything else with vector information) to a cylindrical surface so that I can afterwards use it to emboss the text?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi,

What you did with illustrator is a nice approach to get the font you want as a sketch, the only thing that is left to do is to make it cylindrical, the font I mean

The best way to get that cylindrical sketch is by using the sheet metal workspace, so if you could provide a picture of the final result you're looking for, I'll make a screencast for you on how to make it

Wrapping text around a cylinder comes up quite frequently.  Here's one of the latest threads.

Hi Saeed,

thanks for the offer. Here is a screenshot showing the item so far. The Irish harp is also a dxf import as is the motif on the other side.

The text I want to add is shown in black around the edge. Here it's only a decal though. Having imported the sketch I then need to extrude it, cutting into the material.

A final step, though not really necessary, would be to add milling (ie corrugations) to this cylindrical surface).

Thanks,

Richard

Thanks Saeed, that did it. Sorry for the delayed response.

I hadn't explored the sheet metal tools, so now I think I will 😉

cheers,

Richard
