Editing the profile sketch of an extrusion doesn't update the extrusion

This is a simplified example of the problem I encountered:

  1. draw a simple sketch, a rectangle with a circle at the center;Sketch_1.png
  2. stop sketch;
  3. extrude the rectangle -- results in a plate with a hole in the center, as expected; Extrusion_1.png
  4. edit the profile sketch adding another circle;
  5. stop sketch;
  6. extrusion has only the first hole and not the second;

Extrusion_2.png

I  would expect the extrusion to now have 2 holes corresponding to the circles in the profile sketch.

I think you might have record history turned off, do you have a time line at the bottom of your screen?

Mark:

The time-line is present. I access ‘edit sketch profile’ menu item by right clicking on the extrusion icon in the time-line.

Checking Preferences->General->Design, Design History = Capture Design History (Parametric Modeling)

This is expected behavior.  The Extrude feature only tracks what you select when you create it.  It does not automatically pick up new geometry added to the sketch.  You need to edit the Extrude and select the profile that you want to extrude.

Would this make a reasonable 'feature request' then?

No, I would not think automatically adding extrudes would be a good feature. It may help in this simmple case, but as you grow in your confidence your sketches will get more complicated.

Then the ability to control what you want extruded and what not to be underestimated.

Unless of course that automatic behavior can be turned off somewhere 😉

So what would happen if one edited the version on the timeline prior to the extrusion?

When you are editing an existing Sketch you are automatically jumping back in the timeline to the point where the sketch was first created.

Whatever you add to an existing Sketch is added to that point in the timeline when the sketch was created.

So this situation would be as if both circles were available at the initial extrusion, but you only selected that first circle to extrude.

Correct. This allows you, vor example to create several bodies/components and combinations thereoff from the same sketch at different points in the timeline.

As a direct modeling software I guess this would make sense. However, I would still see the ease of use if the sketch was linked to the body extruded to it. As a student I've learned a few CAD packages and little details like this one makes it hard to flip between them.

Did you run any tests if the behavior reported in this ancient thread is still the same ?

If so, can you provide a model that exhibit that behavior ?

Right. The Extrude feature on the timeline only knows the profile you clicked on when you created it. So first you edit the sketch, and when you're done with that you also edit the extrude feature and reselect the desired profile.

Hopefully that was understood 4 years ago.

Hmmm frustrating behavior. How does one access at extrude action to add updated sketch elements.

It's not very conducive to iterative design...

For anyone else banging their head against a wall with this... I found a way to include new sketch elements to an extrude action. Double click the extrude icon at the bottom left of the screen (in the timeline).. then Shift+Click the new sketch elements to include them. This updated the extrude to include the new sketch elements.

That is exactly what was explained already. Editing the Extrude event and adding/subtracting to the profile selection.
