Editing a Sculpture

Hey guys, just know the basics in Fusion so far, but, bought a 3D Printer and been having some fun with that and have a question.

I downloaded a 3D image (Hypnotoad) and matching base. I was looking at those $10 audio chips you get for greeting cards and such so I can add audio to the model, and wanted to edit the image file to cut out shapes for the batteries/module/speaker.

Everytime I click the flat bottom to sketch, it won't let me. The sketch always shows on the plane about 110mm below the model. Do I have to do something to the file first? convert it to something?

I have a Wednesday Addams bust I want to print as well, and basically same issue. Creator did an amazing job, but mis-spelled her name.... Wendesdey.... I'd like to flatten that whole area (text is extruded out) and replace it with engraved lettering with correct spelling.

Can I edit these files in Fusion? or do I need another app?

This is the base for Hypnotoad I'm trying to edit. Again, just looking for basic squares/circles on the bottom for the battery/board... and for Wednesday Addams, chiseld font effect (bit trickier I assume)

Hi,

please share your basic design and tell where to add text.

File > export > save as f3d on local drive  > attach it to the next post.

hello, finish your work as a volume body as usual. then bring it into the network environment where your base is and "tessellate" the volume body in a network body.
these are then to be combined by combining. there is some training on youtube.

Editing triangulated polygon models already isn't Fusion 360's strongest suit.

The purpose of almost all of the mesh tools is to repair meshes and by some means reverse-engineering them to end up with a solid model. Models that lend themselves to this are usually of mechanical nature and feature a lot of prismatic geometry.

Highly textured models consisting of triangulated high polygon count meshes such as the toad model you provided a link to don't lend themselves to reverse engineering and are not the type of object you want to edit in Fusion 360!

Hallo @TrippyLighting , peter This is exactly what is explained in the film, that it is not necessary to convert every stl, but to modernize it by tessellating volumetric bodies into network bodies and just as easily combining them with revising an existing network model.
you do not go into this novelty - why? greetings mango

Good question 😉

Thanks for pointing out that video!

That video is also a prime example of why I very rarely watch these videos. Like the vast majority of Fusion 360 tutorials and They are so squarely aimed at beginners that I lose my patience 5 minutes into the video.

Explaining the new stuff to an advanced user of CAD and 3D modeling software would take all but 10 minutes, not over an hour (Yawn).

Occasionally that means I miss out on new functionality 😉

I do stand by what I wrote, however. In this instance, Fusion 360 can probably be used. But for many other modifications of triangulated meshes, it is simply not suitable and at his point in time Meshmixer is the better tool.

It's a little bit like going to a steak house and ordering the one vegetarian dish they have on the menu. I'll work but is unlikely to be a very good vegetarian dish 😉

hallo @TrippyLighting - peter actually i want to let it be good and not undermine your opinion any further,

BUT - the video is exactly what you HAVE to know in order to deal with the new network environment properly.

Anyway, thank you for your thoughts on eating where you are right as always. meat at vegan meals!

I always welcome someone to challenge my opinion, that's how we learn.

With the exception of the "merge" mesh bodies, I was aware of all of the other things already as many of them were presented by one of the Developers in an Expert Elite online meeting.

Many of those come from  Meshmixer, but you have to know Meshmixer to get a better understanding of what you can do with Fusion 360 and what is better to do In Meshmixer.

I think you misconstrued the comparison I was trying to make, and probably deliberately so.

Oh, that's a big video... will sit and give it a watch, hopefully answers the question.

Again, I just want to take the model and cut out a few square holes for a battery pack and speaker box. 🙂

Side note... is there a forum admin or webmaster contact? Contact Support on here is simply about products and pre-sales... the email notification on here when I get a reply has never worked for me. I click to receive them, and I've checked my junkmail folder... but nope, never. I got like 8 responses to this for example and nothing in my email.

you have to activate in your profile that you want to have email notifications. but also notice that my earlier answer how you can do your work obey. make your battery box and put it in the mesh. then convert this volume body into a mesh with "tessellate". then combine the two meshes. done

If you have a mesh, use Meshmixer. Fusion360 is in some awkward phase of trying to integrate Meshmixer, and doesn't really work well.

Watch this for how to do it in Meshmixer: https://autode.sk/2WYDKyf

Got distracted a bit on another project, or 3... plus no matter what I do in settings, I get newsletters and such from Fusion but no email notifications. Very annoying.

I grabbed Meshmixer a little while ago but never played with it much. I'll watch the video and give it a try because Fusion360 isn't being friendly with me. 😄

Luckily, all I really need to to is cut out 2 block shapes on the bottom of the base, maybe a few narrow channels for the wires, and that's it. The sound recorder/speaker came in from eBay a few days ago so I can get the dimensions finally.

@mango.freund I managed to make the box shape (just a box to try with, nothing fancy) and went into mesh, tesselate... was confused when you said merge, but realized "oh yeah, drop down menu" and sure enough an option to cut out the shape. Nice and easy....
