draw lines on cylinders

I am trying to create a line on a cylinder to use as a path for a spiral extrusion. I tried drawing two rectangles on two different planes and using the loft function, but the swath cut is not even along the length of the cylinder. I have seen a video on projecting lines for creating helical gears, but I need to hit specific angles on the cylinder. I want that rectangle to be cut from 0deg (bottom of cylinder)to 22.5deg (top of cylinder), 90deg (bottom of cylinder) to 112.5deg (top of cylinder), etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Attached in your model with the first path created and the sweep cut preformed.  If you cannot take it apart, using the timeline, let me know and I will do a Screencast.

I thank you both kindly. I ended up drawing a 3D line from a point at the base of the cylinder to one 22.5deg from it counter clockwise from it at the top of the cylinder. I then projected the sketch of the line to make a curve. I then cut my slot and patterned the feature 8x. Once again, I thank you for both your time and consideration.

I'm not sure exactly what geometry you're trying to achieve with your slots. But...

You know you can create a Sweep with a Twist Angle, right? Put whatever shape of slot you want right into the sketch for the cylinder, have another sketch with a line right up the middle of the cylinder to use as a path. Sweep the slot shape up the cylinder using that path to cut the slot, and type in your 22.5-deg twist angle.

If this can produce the geometry you're after, then it's a lot easier than messing with 3D paths and stuff like that.
