Draw in Procreate on .OBJ or .USDZ file exported from Fusion 360

Hi all,

I am trying to use the new function of the app Procreate to draw on 3d object. It can draw on .OBJ or .USDZ files and on the sample files it works perfectly.

Some of my files from Fusion 360, it can upload.

Some files get a warning: The model has no valid meshes.

But for all my files I cannot draw on the surface of the model. The pencil stripes will scatter around on different parts of the model.

It also doesn't seem to work for simple models like a cube or a ball do not work.

Has anybody tried drawing in Procreate on a model created from Fusion 360?

Or knows what to do with the model before exporting to .OBJ or .USDZ?

I see online for different 3d CAD programs that it can be an issue with UV textures, but I don't have any further information about that.

Can you share a model (.stl or .obj) that exhibits that problem?

It might have to do with the resolution you export the .stl with,

Hi, I too am intrigued to find an answer.

I have successfully opened an obj that I saved on the cloud and then opened with app, ProCreate. I can rotate and use AR feature but no clean meshes as you’ve mentioned? I’ve tried opening layers, working on 2D sketch and imported photos to show as material but it bounces across full model?

I’m not sure if it is the way I am modelling or assembling or saving options, but still trying.

Ok,

I found a solution that works for me. I can import a model I made in Fusion and draw on it in Procreate.

I only need the program blender to do 1 UV mapping step.

And if I import the file directly from Onedrive it gives me the error: The model has no valid meshes. But if I download the file directly to a folder on my IPAD I can open it! It took me a ton of testing I didn't have to before I found this out!!

- Save your Fusion file as .obj

- open blender, click standard cube, delete it. Click import, import .obj

- Menu UV Editing, screen splits, on right screen go in Edit mode, go to sub-menu UV, select Smart UV project, click ok.

- On the left screen you now see how the different surfaces are arranged.

- click Export and export obj.

Don't forget to make sure the file is saved on your Ipad before trying to open it.
