do not understand how to move a smaller rectangle inside a larger rectangle

I have a rectangle inside another rectangle.  I change the length of the outer rectangle.  The inner rectangle is no longer centered.  I try to change the distance, but the constraints won't allow this.  I try to remove constraints, but am not understanding how to do this correctly.  How is this done?  (thank you).

Have you looked at the basic training on sketching here.

And specificaly on constraints here.

There are a couple of approaches you can use, depending on what you are trying to do.  There are also two types of rectangles, each of which have different ways to deal with them.

Here is a little screencast that shows how I would do this, illustrating the two types of rectangles.  The basic idea is to use dimensions to control this:

There are many ways to do it, Jeff's method is one way, but I saw a screencast just now I think is related,

there is is a dimension on the lower internal line that causes your problem.

I would remove it, then sketch a "point" on the two relevant vertical lines, make them "horizontal" to each other, then add required dimensions.

Quick fix, packing to leave on Easter break, otherwise could go into more detail.

i know I should be teaching myself how to use "midpoint" constraints, but ....

Thank you Mark. I tend to get overwhelmed.  I did (re 🙂 ) watch the video you recommended.  While the other posts led me to specifically address this challenge in my Fusion 360 knowledge, certainly this video is a gem to get a overview feel for constraints.  I very much appreciate your answer.

Thank you very much Jeff.  After watching this video, I spent about an hour on sketch dimensions.  The challenge is (as noted in the next answer!)  There were additional constraints that shouldn't have been there preventing re-dimensioning.  Your video helped me better understand the power of (correctly) using sketch dimensions.
