I have been struggling with creating something similar to the attached image and need some help..

i need an organic like dome with a flat bottom, which is then shelled so its lightweight.

i also want organic shaped pockets cut into the surface, where another material will be inserted

Im sure someone will whip it up in 5 minutes and leave me dumbfounded 😁

It's really relatively simple, if you know what tools to use.

For the screencast I simply made a T-Spline (sculpt)  cylinder with 24 vertical division.

I selected every second vertical edge and scaled these in to arrive at a star shape.

Then I selected the upper star-shaped edge and enable the soft modification option and pled around with the controls.

I scold inward and pivoted the star-sheped eggs around the vertical axis.

then I use the "Modify->Fill Hole" function to lose the hole.

Then I thickened the shape.

The Hole fill function leaves artifacts and I'd usually not use it but fill it by hand with quads only, but for a quick shape it works well enough.

That's great. Thanks

What about inserting multiples of something like the attached, that are cut into the surface and would be a different material?

Two questions before I proceed:

1. Ho is it going to manufactured ? I assume 3D printing.

2. Do you want these shapes cut into the surface or protruding from the surface ?

Hi TrippyLighting

No 5 axis machined.

Both, I want the shapes to be a different materials. So I would like pockets cut out of the body and inserted with another material that will be protruding from the body.

If that makes sense?

Yes, it does. I'll see if I can get to it tonight.

My thinking at the moment is t simply to design these squiggle blobs also as separate T-Splines and then use "Modify -> combine" with the cut option and Keep tools enabled.

That way you'll get pockets cut out of the main shell, but retain the squiggle blobs (sorry, could not come up with a better name 😉
