Cutting into textured curved body

I have a curved knurled body and I need to make a section of it smooth without any texture. I've tried cutting into it but because the body is round the indent isn't uniform, see image; I need the smooth section it to be flush with the rest of the body. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Create a sketch on the horizontal face (x), Draw the profile to extrude up as a cut.

You can decide if the wall I circled is to stay the same (parallel to is other side,) or the pair are to align to the cylinder axis, to get the back wall (A) curved, Sketch > Project the wall of 1,2,or 3.

Might help....

I'm guessing you want the smooth area to just be free of knurls, if so, use a two direction extrude:

  1. Create a sketch on the top of the knurled cylinder.
  2. Draw (or project) a circle (or arc) at the radius of the flat.
  3. Create a closed boundary that includes  the knurls.
  4. Extrude the closed boundary using a two direction extrude. One direction to the top of the flat area, the second to the bottom.
