Hi southernmachine.in,

Welcome to Fusion forum.

Please refer to following links describing how to create and use Fusion 360 drawing templates -

Hi,

Create a template with attributes in another application.

Save it as dwg and load it into your special folder in Fusion.

Then

I did those things and created a custom template which is in there and editable, etc. When I create a new drawing and select the template, the new drawing comes up with the default drawing template. Nothing in the custom template appears. I don't think custom drawing templates are functional at this time. I hope there are plans to resolve this.

@ralarock Are you trying to add a sheet to an existing drawing and add a custom template or are you starting from scratch? I just tested create a new drawing and selecting a custom template and it worked fine. There doesn't seem to be a way to add a custom template to an existing drawing though so if you wanted different templates on different sheets there doesn't seem to be any way to do that.

Looks like you can add a custom template to a set of drawings, right click one of the thumbnails at the bottom of the screen and select add sheet then on the dialog you can choose a custom template. Clicking on the + to create a new sheet uses the last template selected.

Thanks for asking. I created several version of template. At first, thinking it would just work, with all the bells an whistles. Then, as each one failed to load, taking out features of the template trying to isolate the cause of the failure. In the end, I found that the template loads intermittently. Sometimes, it actually loads. Though most of the time I just get a blank default drawing.

With the template created, I create a New Drawing From Design. Full Assembly is selected. Create New is selected.  I select my template. Then pick OK. As I said, most of the time this results in a drawing with a blank, default, template.

Hi ralarok,

If you didn't get your templates working yet, here's some suggestions that will hopefully help.  One thing to keep in mind, if you're using them, you don't have to use the placeholder views to create a template.  They can come later.  From scratch here's what I would do to first get up and running:

1.  Start Fusion > Expand your username menu (upper right) > Preferences

2.  Under General, click on Drawing

3.  If you always use a certain standard/units, change Inherit from Design for both of these to the one you want

4.  Check the override defaults box and make any changes you want below > OK

5.  File > New Drawing Template (this will use all the settings you just specified in Properties)

6.  Add Notes, an image to the titleblock (double-click the titleblock to do this), more sheets if you want with different sizes, and adjust any other Annotation or Sheet Settings using the menus at the bottom of the screen.

7.  File > Save

8.  Now when you create a new drawing, instead of "From Scratch", browse to and select your template.

Template.png

If you have created placeholder views, these have Representations for each "asset" type, assembly, component, flat pattern, etc.  If your design does not contain this type of asset, the placeholder views won't be applied.

You can also open/edit your template at any time and that will be applied for subsequent drawings you create with it.  So I'd get things up and running first with the right units, font, precision, etc., then expand from there.

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for the nice detailed reply. Unfortunately, I did everything you recommended. And tried a LOT more. I did tons of trial and error throughout one long day trying to get templates to work because it's that important to me. Templates just don't work on my system. Every once in a while a new drawing will be created using the template I selected. About 95% of the time, so far and I've created quite a few drawings now, the template does not appear in a new drawing. Just the default, blank page. It's frustrating, but there is something broken in Fusion 360 and I can't seem to find the work around yet.

Does anyone know if there is any effort being made on the part of Fusion development to fix this?

Hi ralarok,

As far as I know, we haven't received any other reports of this problem.  Are you on Mac or Windows? If you expand Help > About, what is the version number (should be 2.0.3800).  If you haven't done so recently, can you close Fusion, reboot, and try the drawing creation again?

Are you having issues with any other aspects of drawing creation?  View placement, etc. or just templates?

Would you be able to send me (christopher.miller@autodesk.com) your files so I could take a look?  If you click the version number for the template (and slso for a drawing created with that template) click Open Details on Web then in the upper right > Export > Fusion 360 Archive and then send those to me.  This could be for any part (even just a box) as long as it reproduces the problem.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi ralarok,

One other important item I forgot to ask about... are you importing a titleblock that you created outside of Fusion?  Does it contain the titleblock only or titleblock and border?  In Sheet Settings at the bottom of the drawings window, do you have display border and titleblock turned on?

If it's a dwg created outside of Fusion that you are using for your titleblock the insertion point will determine where the titleblock appears in your drawing, the lower right corner should be at 0,0. If the dwg you're using for the titleblock also includes the border, then the lower left corner needs to be at 0,0.  But if you're specifying a template and getting the default one instead, this doesn't sound like the problem.  Again, if you can send me the Fusion Archive (f3z) of the template and drawing, that will help confirm what's going on.

Thanks,

Chris

Fusion 360 Version is 2.0.3800. See attached.

I have rebooted the system several times. Yes, I have had quite a few problems with Fusion locking up and crashing in various instances. Yesterday several times. Each time I sent in the bug report when prompted to do so. I started the computer system this morning and the same template problem persists today. The crashes seem to be more frequent as my design has gotten more complicated. Though the base parts are simple shapes.

Here are my system specs:

OS Name    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Version    10.0.16299 Build 16299
OS Manufacturer    Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer    Hewlett-Packard
System Model    h8-1090t
System Type    x64-based PC
Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU         970  @ 3.20GHz, 3201 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date    American Megatrends Inc. 6.16, 9/15/2011
SMBIOS Version    2.5
Embedded Controller Version    255.255
BIOS Mode    Legacy
BaseBoard Manufacturer    PEGATRON CORPORATION
BaseBoard Model    Not Available
BaseBoard Name    Base Board
Platform Role    Desktop
Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    24.0 GB
Total Physical Memory    24.0 GB
Available Physical Memory    16.9 GB
Total Virtual Memory    48.0 GB
Available Virtual Memory    38.5 GB
Page File Space    24.0 GB

I am using the standard title block. I have not tried a custom title block yet or importing one from an external file. Perhaps this is the solution to my problem? Yes the border and title block are turned on.

As for sharing the files, I will set it up.

Thanks for the assistance.

There is no "upper right > Export > Fusion 360 Archive" Do you mean the down arrow? That saves an f2t file locally. Is that what you want? And, so far, I don't have a drawing made with the template. Sorry, but that is the point. Drawings are always made with the default drawing template on my system. Do you want a drawing that failed to be made with the custom template? Or, perhaps, a design that won't produce a drawing with my custom template on my system?

Hi ralarock,

Yes, the down arrow then Archive, you can send me those downloaded files directly (christopher.miller@autodesk.com).  I'll take anything you can send me, ideally the template, a drawing made with the template that is incorrect, and a drawing made with a default template that is correct.

Thanks,
Chris

Okay, so @cmiller66 demonstrated that my problem is caused by a failure between the chair and the keyboard. I must have missed a key point when watching the training videos on using drawings and templates. There are serveral types of templates. Among them Assembly and Component Detail. How Fusion selects which to use when is a bit of a mystery to me right now, but I will figure that out eventually. Thank you to Mr. Miller and Autodesk for helping me sort this out.
