Creating tapers using draft

Hi,

I am drawing a chair leg and having trouble creating the tapers i need to shape the leg. Here are the steps I have taken:

-Create sketch and draw the 2d profile using the line tool

-push/pull to create body

-use draft tool to select parting plane and draft one face to create taper.

so far so good, except that this leg needs more multiple tapers/drafts, and I want one to taper/draft just 8" from the bottom, and another 6" from the top, rather than the whole length of the leg.

What's the word around here? I tried creating a parting plane and using that to draft, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Cliff

@cliffWKXCQ, There are lots of ways to do this.  Can you supply some more detail about what the table leg should look like?  For instance, if the table leg is in general "round" (i.e. could be made on a lathe), then I'd recommend using Revolve for this, and to put the "draft" in the profile.  If the table leg is meant to be "square" in nature, you could use Draft with Split Faces, or Extrude with a Taper Angle.  If you want to share some images, or even better, the model you have in progress, you'll get lots of help.

Thanks Jeff!

Here is a link to the project: http://a360.co/2BpU22i

Hope this helps. Let me know if another format would be better.

As you can see in the model, both the front and back legs of the chair are square edged, solid bodies. I need to be able to taper them from the top outside face, and then the from the bottom inside face, while keeping the square plane consistent at the plane of the seat. Likely that is not too clear, but...

the point is that I am trying to learn how to apply drafts at various heights and faces, rather than to the entire side.

Thanks,

Thanks for sharing the model, @cliffWKXCQ, that is exactly the right format.  I'm still not 100% clear what you are trying to achieve, but here is a screencast showing a few techniques to get angled sides on your chair legs:  Using the sketch, using Draft, and using Extrude with Taper Angle.  Hope one of them will work for you.

Thanks Jeff! I think using Split Faces is going to be the trick.

Big help!
