Creating, populating and using groups - not working as expected

Good afternoon all,

I'm attempting to organize a project that now contains hundreds of bodies as a result of some circular patterns that I've been using, and a couple dozen components.

First, with regard to Bodies and Groups:

Using Bodies > New Group I managed to create a group and name it. I then select bodies, and right click to select Move to Group. My newly created group cannot be selected as a Target Group. Clicking on the group does nothing at all.  Ordinarily I would expect the dialog box to display "1 Selected". It does not. And the selected bodies remain in the root Bodies folder. Note that I can only select the root Bodies folder as a target...which defeats the purpose for Move to Group.

I also tried to drag and drop the Bodies into the Group for the heck of it and that ability doesn't appear to be implemented at all. Makes no sense that developers would exclude such a basic UI feature as drag and drop. So I'm hoping I simple overlooked something.

Next, organizing Components:

I've read suggestions about creating sub assemblies to nest and organize components. What other ways have you used to organize components in your projects? I wish Fusion allowed simple folder creation and organization.  I'm not quite sure why it wouldn't. Folders play a key role in visual information and asset management. Again, I am hoping I have simply overlooked something.

Your guidance would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Joe

You may want to familiarize yourself with the difference between components and bodies in Fusion 360.

Then you may familiarize yourself with Fusion 360's R.U.L.E #1 and see if all that helps.

Thanks Trippy.

Very useful links. Rather than continue to make a poorly organized project even worse, I used the advice in your post and structured a new project...moving over much of what I had in the previous one.  What a difference! Totally worth the investment today.

So that answer half my post. What about groups?  There doesn't seem to be a decent resource that explains how and when to use groups. Any advice there?

Groups are used to group items in the timeline only. This allows you to collapse and expand parts of the timeline so it is more manageable.

If you insert a component with a timeline into another design and look at the timeline in that design, you'll see that that component is a group represented by the little plus sign. You can expand that plus sign to see the timeline of the component.

Up until recently, this has been possible.

I am experiencing the same issue.
Please advise.

Exact same problem here too. I have actually been working on a project for a few months now where I have Bodies that were grouped easily (drag and drop), and now when creating a new component, new bodies won't group.
