Creating Custom Environment for Rendering in Fusion 360

I understand that only HDR images (with extensions such as .hdr and .exr) can be attached as custom environments when rendering (in Render mode). I took a few photos and created .hdr images. However when I try to use my custome-made HDR images (i.e., attach them as custom environment--see attached), I get the following error:

 

Error: Render Workspace Environment Error
The selected image cannot be used as an Environment image.

/Users/Houman/Desktop/Untitled_HDR2.exr

The content of the file should be stored in Latitude/Longitude format with an aspect ratio of 2:1.

 

Has anyone been able to create an HDR image in Latitude/Longitude format with an aspect ratio of 2:1 to use in Fusion 360?

Hi @Anonymous,

 

You are right, only hdr files can be attached as custom environments. More info here - http://fusion360.autodesk.com/learning/learning.html?guid=GUID-5646B2CB-0156-431C-B642-BCFEBEA5722B

This environment map is a spherical projection and uses lat/long method of projection, as explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equirectangular_projection

 

Make sure that the map that your are using has an aspect ratio of 2:1. You can attach it here, if you want us to check it.

Is there a reason to the limitation of only using the Lat/Long method ?

 

I've tried to use these light probes and while they work perfectly fine in Blender, I cannot use them in Fusion 360.

You can use all the probes on that page they just need to be converted. You can use HDR Shop or Photoshop to convert them to the proper format.

The long/lat method is the best format but I agree Fusion should be able to use both. I think the reason they don't is because fusion lacks the necessary UV mapping needed, but I could be wrong. This is a good one for the idea station....

File conversion did not occur to me. Doh!

 

I dont use this stuff often enough tough to justify purchasing either of these tools. I'll put this ins the Idea Station and report back here.

Another reason I think they only support long/lat is because you can enable the ground plane which in essence flattens the bottom of the sphere while keeping the mapping correct. The cube method has a lot of issues with this if the UV mapping isn't spot on.

Yeah I thought GIMP could do it but if it can I couldn't find a way. You can still find HDR Shop 1.0 online it was free for non-commercial use.

But as you can see once converted you get great results.

Awesome looking render. Thats so cool!

I was looking to trying to get a custom background and found this page...will read the links soon......just wanted to say kudos on that render. Love the reflections too.
