Creating adjustable half-lap joints

I am quite new to Fusion 360.  Have a bit of experience with Sketchup, but ideas I've been coming up lately have made me want to switch to a more powerful program.  So I've started trying Fusion 360 by mocking up a shelving unit.  However, I'm wanting to make it fully adjustable, using parameters.  I have it so that the horizontal shelves can adjust as desired, but I'm connecting them to the vertical supports using a half-lap joint.  This is where the problem is.  I'm not figuring out how to create the cut in the vertical supports, that can still adjust with the number of shelves and spacing.  Do I need to create a new sketch?  Start over from the beginning?  Any help is appreciated!

You can sketch on the vertical support to create the cut outs.

Sketch on the vertical did the trick.  I hadn't made multiple sketches in a model yet.  Chris, when I tried to select the cutout feature, for whatever reason, it wouldn't let me.  However, by choosing faces instead, I was able to make it work.  Also, I realized some other little tips/tricks from your video.  Many thanks to you and lichtzeichenanlage!
