Create a spiral line in a 3D Sketch

If I were to create a spiral sketch line old-style, I would probably create a series of offset planes stacked in the Z axis. Then I would draw a circle on each plane, after which I'd use construction lines to divide the circle into quadrants. So if I wanted to draw an upward spiral beginning at the 12 o'clock position on the bottom plane to the three o'clock position on the plane immediately above, I would have to project the sketch points.
With the greatly enhanced features of the 3D sketch function, it looks as if Fusion is creating the planes for me on the fly. Is this a safe assumption? In lieu of planes, can I use a single vertical line of the appropriate height from my 12:00 o'clock start position, then draw a second line of the appropriate height also starting on the bottom plane at the 3:00 o'clock position, and then the same at the 6:00 o'clock position, and so forth? Would I be able to connect all the points using arcs?
Do I need to use any projections in a 3D sketch, or can I just continue until the spiral is as high as I want it?
