Copying and paste in fusion 360 sketch

At this point I think the copy paste function in fusion 360 is terrible.  I am in my sketch, created a rectangle, I then right-clicked and select Move/Copy and there is not a copy command available anywhere inside this option which I can find...ONLY MOVE.  Why call it move/copy when there is not a copy option?  I have looked everywhere on your support site, youtube on how to copy and move and I can find no instructions except I found one video on YouTube, tried it and it did not work.  In the video, he right clicked, selected copy, then move off the rectangle then right click again and selected paste.  It then pasted the object on top of the original (which in my view is terrible, you end up with things on top of other things and you cannot tell), then using the displayed arrows moved it off the original.   I tried the exact same process and it did not work.

So I created a test component

Now in some weird mode..

I created a rectangle, then a second rectangle.  When I select either one both are selected.  So checked to see if I am some kind of select mode, but I don't see anything or a Clear Selection mode command.  The whole thing seems a mess, so I thought I would delete the test component, I right-clicked on the test component and select delete option, my rectangles are highlighted in blue and it does nothing!!!!  I can't delete the component!!

For just trying to copy and paste, I have gone down a rabbit hole of frustration, and have wasted an hour or more trying to figure out what should be a VERY simple thing.  I have been using CAD software for 30 year.  AutoSketch, has much better tools for modifying sketches, the translate tool would be great in this program.   I have created some real stuff and am quite please with most of it, but of all the features, copying should be the easiest and it is the worst......

Finally, I don't understand why when moving an object in sketch, the software does not simple allow the user to select/snap to a point on the object and move it around freely, then select with precision where to position it, another snap to point grid etc..  Why restrict to x/y directions??

That vid is out of date If they are not 2017 vid's and have the move command in them that part will be wrong.

The copy and past is correct, Question for you how is fusion to know where you wont the sketch to go.

The move/copy command does not have move/copy Sketch elements in it yet, It will be coming.

You have to high light the sketch first, right click select copy then right click and select past This is for copying and pasting in the same sketch.

For copying and pasting into a new sketch if there already sketch elements there you just highlight the point where you wont the sketch to be and select past it will land there about, or just select past and it will land on it original position in the new sketch where it's getting pasted. Robot Indifferent

i appreciate the Sunday feedback...

Just to let you know everything I have been doing is working in the same
sketch.

In terms of the question for me on how Fusion is to know where to put the
copy.. Well Fusion wouldn't know, so it should in my view ask the user by
displaying an icon by the mouse pointer letting the user know it has
something to paste, then let the user select a position on the grid. I can
then use constraints to position it with precision. Automatically putting
it on top the the original is a bad idea in my view, it leads to hidden
items...

I tried the instructions, I opened a new sketch session, created a
rectangle, right clicked select copy. Then right click again and
surprisingly paste was available. I pasted the rectangle then moved it
using the arrow. It worked.

So i thought I would try it again, I deleted the copied rectangle. i then
went through the steps again. But this time no copy command! The
rectangle is all blue, but no copy command, I tried a bunch of things to no
avail. This is what is so frustrating, it seem to come and go. i tried a
number of times but i can not replicate the first time it worked.

I don't understand what you mean by this..
*The move/copy command does not have move/copy Sketch elements in it yet,
It will be coming.*

It means you can't use the move/copy command to move a sketch to move and copy it you can only use it to move a sketch

It's Monday night yes I am in your future.

A sketch has to be active for the past to work you can copy a non active sketch just not past it.

When you have pasted the sketch you can use any off the move commands to move the sketch and it will only move that sketch and will not leave anything behind, you can move the sketch ok that move then do another move as you see fit.

That vid you said about who was it that did it and did you leave a comment.

And the problem you said about I can't repeat that, If you try again can you do a screencast and show this plus supply the file you had this problem with

 https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast

to get the file out of fusion

Go to File -> Export and save as a .F3D Archive File and attach it to your next post

Ok, I will get a screencast, haven't done that, i will check it out.
But it will tomorrow afternoon.

In terms of the moving after pasting, I have pasted a number of times and the arrows did not show up to move it.
I think there were a number of objects on on top of another since I could delete the highlighted item and it would still be there.

I end up deleted the whole thing and started over.

Thanks for the help...

I have seen a problem with paste if the original curves you've copying are still selected. It doesn't happen all the time but after the copy try clicking to unselect then right click and you should get the paste option. Also be careful with paste as it's a 2 stage process, if you paste and just cancel the move you get a copy on top of the original also if you paste a copy to a new position then undo you will only undo the move, you'll need another undo to undo the copy.

I Understand... but I have deselected the item, including pressed escaped etc, but copy still did not show up...

Your point about the cancel the move just proves my point on the dangers of automatically pasting on top of the original.

This screencast was for another similar question, answers the how?

but will not add to the discussion.

The Move/copy in the rmb menu will copy components and bodies but not other entities.

I posted two screencasts. they are called no copy on menu 1 & 2.

http://autode.sk/2mgylue

http://autode.sk/2m6F4rp

I made them public.
What it show it works a couple of times then eventually I can only
copy a line. If I select the whole rectangle the copy does not show
up. I don't understand why it show copy and other times it does not.
Maybe I am selecting it wrong somehow.

the second video show the copy not showing up when selecting the whole
object, but I can select only a line.

You need to use a left or right drag box or click on the line not just click in spaces That does not work with sketches in fusion.
