Converting images to 3d object

Hello All,

My name is Sarah and I am a year eleven student and just recently installed Fusion 360.

I am wondering how many people have used the function to convert multiple images into a 3D object for the following reasons :

1. What is the optimum distance to have camera from object ( object is 180mm H X 45mm W X 25mm D )

2. What is the optimum amount of images to take from each angle for most accurate results.

3. How many different angled shots should I take, and when changing the camera angle or height, should I try and ensure camera is always the exact same distance from object as previous images were taken.

And lastly, has anyone had much success in getting detailed prints using this function.

Thank you in advance for any assistance provided.

Hello Sarah and welcome to the forums.

I am assuming you want to use something like Autodesk Remake software to convert your photos to a 3d model.

There are a lot of things to consider and a lot of trial and error because each object is different. Also if the object is shiny you will probably not get very good results.

1.)Distance is tricky, the main concern here is lens distortion. The more lens distortion you have the less accurate your final model will be.

2.)As a general rule of thumb you will need around 75 photos from different angles.

3.) you will need pictures from a bunch of different angles and yes try to keep the camera the same distance away for each shot.

Here is a link to some tutorials that should answer all of your questions:

Cheers

Hi Phil,

Thank you very much for the link to the tutorials, will hopefully start taking images today once I get the turntable completed.

Will keep you posted how I went as planning on taking images every 10 degrees X 4 different angles ( 144 images )

Thanks again

Sarah
