Converting Body to Component?

As a newbie to Fusion 360 I created a a body and it's associated sketches.

I really didn't think of the model will have to objects.  Basically:

1. container object

2. sled object : slides into the container.

Not knowing that Fusion 360 is designed using Top-Down Assembly approach in order to effectively use components.

Question:

Do I create another Design project and convert the existing body into a component?  From what i read to accomplish this:

1. In existing project, need to go into direct modeling mode (removes history).

2. copy the body

3. In a new project file, go into direct modeling mode

4. create a component

5. paste the object from step 2.

6. Create a new component (ie., sled object)

Is there a way to get the timeline back?

2. Is there an alternative method?

Hope this makes sense.

Attached is the original project file (ie, bottom up design not recommended if components are needed)

Forget you ever heard of Direct Modelling, because you will never get the timeline back.

There is only 1 body in this file, so I have no clues about the second object.

Each real world part should be in it's own Component and using Rule #1.

Why did you make the 2 midplanes, the 1st one is a copy of the most stable XY plane.  If you need the 2nd one, put the origin there when you start.

Blue sketch articles should keep you awake at night,

fully defined sketches work best for parameter changing.

Might help....

Accepted solution

In your case, because you do not have dependent features in you timeline, you can create a new component and drag your sketches into it.  This will take the body automatically.  DO NOT get used to this method as it will not always work.  In your case due to this early stage in your work it does.  Video will show.

Yes do not create the other body yet.  The file represents the housing.  I posted only to make sure what i was reading was  the way to proceed.

i will revisit the duplicate plane.

After completing your solution, the mirroring to the other side is missing?

I don't know how the mirror feature got to this state. Simply re-select the feature to be mirrored and accept with OK.
